Hello everyone.

So i have these two PC monitors wich i game my Xbox One on: Asus VG248QE and Asus VX248H wich are both 1080p native.

So, what happens here is the following: On the games that are 1080p native they don't lose quality, games that are 900p or for whatever other reason, they look terrible, they don't upscale like playing on a TV, because if i play on my Samsung SmarTV 40" all the games look perfect, there's no resolution differences or image quality ...

Is there a way to make the console output the games quality to the monitor as the same as she does for a TV or any other way around this?

Best regards all!

I have a 360 hooked to my 23" 1080p monitor. I play Forza 4 on it, it doesn't look too good :p You might be right, the up scaling on a LCD monitor may be poor compared to a TV.

Yeah you're right, it looks terrible. For example bf4 on xbox one is 720p, holy mother it looks like i am playing on 360p resolution .

I have to use the DVI port on my monitor to connect the 360 to it using a DVI to HDMI dongle, not sure if that's the problem. Maybe if my monitor had a HDMI port things would be better, idk.

Most likely not. Some monitors are just that crappy. I have a cheap 22" LG monitor, which in addition to scaling problems also has a very nasty color correction bug (1080p in movie mode looks like shitty NTSC) and very annoying power management system (turns off during movies in "green mode" or darkens when power saving is completely off).

About 5-6 years ago I bought my first 1080p display [Acer]. It was relatively expensive at the time, but it worked just fine with my gaming rig and a PS3 (had 2 HDMI ports + DVI-D + VGA).

my monitor is crap. it has a 120hz refresh rate but only with DVI and it's only colour accurate because I used my x-rite i1 :p everything else about it is terrible (crushing blacks, black levels and contrast post calibration, viewing angles, dithering, etc.)

Yeah but i believe the question here is not the quality of the monitors and yes about scalling features or a away to upscale manually with sucess. Everything on the TV looks 1080p lol... On the monitor, some games... Dear Lord.

Unfortunately it seems that these 2 monitors are just garbage at upscaling, HDMI and DVI wouldn't matter which you use as those both output the video signal so same resolution and same colour (because its a digital signal a 1s and 0s never change). You say tv is fine when it upscales so it seems its the display doing the upscaling and not a video chip on the xbox.

Old article but describes what you're seeing perfectly: Xbox One’s 1080p upscaling makes games look worse. TL;DR: Xbox One is horrible at upscaling.

Best advice I can give is to make sure the Xbox One is fully updated. There was apparently a patch to improve it.

Apparently your monitors don't like 1600 x 900. Try manually forcing them (may require plugging into computer) to that resolution and see if it looks like garbage.

FYI, this monitor is on sale right now which looks like a good deal if you need to replace them:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260148

I have no idea how it works receiving 1600 x 900 though. Edit: Ugh, nevermind; no HDMI.

I don't think it should be putting all the work on the monitor for scaling. If there's really something wrong with the Xbox one and scaling on monitors make some sort of clear visual demonstration and then start a thread on neogaf. They love shitting on Xbox over there so the thread may gain traction. The upshot of that is someone from MS will probably see it and eventually you might get a patch for it. Alternatively you can tweet at Xbox division employees. I doubt contacting customer support would be as effective.

Monitors vary, just because some have great PQ at native res doesn't necessarily mean they also upscale well. It's up to the manufacturer to decide how good a scaler to put in.

It's a hassle, but you may have to play the 900p games at 900p. That said, play around with picture modes and color settings. Some settings scale better than others.

As a general rule, the less processing, the better chance of good picture quality. I run my 32" Panasonic TV in Game mode for everything, so I'm not fighting against heavy processing.

I have improved my situation slightly. I found the native res of Forza 4 online and set that res in the xbox settings so my monitor is doing the scaling. Also changing the color, black levels, in the xbox settings to standard from full allowed the edges to be less pronounced since there's not as much contrast between white and black. While it has improved it is still not perfect. You can also move further away from your monitor so your eyes can't notice the quality as much.

For best picture quality ..native rendered resolution of the game will look best on a monitor whose native resolution is the same of that game. Which is the problem your having. Consoles render games at static set frame rates/resolutions and because of this they will look wonky on monitor's who's resolutions are not native to the game. Aka, New/Old consoles can't render the majority of their games at 1080p, thus you get weird looking distortion on monitors whose native resolution is 1080p.

Now if you were to go find a monitor whose native resolution is 900p, you might not have this problem.

Why up-scaling is such a joke Looks like arse.

Some monitors have a scaler some doesn't, and even if they do they don't upscale to just any resolution. Perhaps 900p is not supported on those models (720p and/or 768p are usually are, but those would be too low for the xbone). For example, I just tried and my Dell monitors makes a much crispier picture in a custom 810p resolution than in 900p. I would go with native 1080p and would let the xbone upscale.

There is a simple reason for that. Monitors don't have any advanced image processing. They just scale the image across all pixels regardless of what resolution it really is.

However, with LCD TV's, all of them have advanced upscaling algorithms, because no TV signal is ever in native resolution. Most Tv programs are not even 720p, let alone 1080p or 4K. So, TV's already have advanced upscaling that makes image superior looking even when upscaled.

That's false. ATSC, PAL, DVD, and BluRay all use very specific resolutions (TVs are designed to handle them all). 1600x900 is a non-standard resolution. The Xbox One is supposed to scale it to a standard resolution (down to 1280 x 720 or up to 1920 x 1080). I'd be digging through the display options on the Xbox looking for a setting for scaling. If enabled, disable; if disabled, enable.

That is the problem, there are no options for scaling on the console. Only resolution and colour depth.

Can you set the resolution to 1600 x 900? It probably won't look the best but it will force the monitor to scale instead of the Xbox One.

I was drunk 98% of the time this was in the dorms so yes that's a strong chance, but on such a small display quality wasn't bad thanks to pixel density. Unit used an LG panel so it wasn't bad overall.

No, Xbox One Settings only have 1080p or 720p. And i tried changing to 720p and playing BF4 and it looked even more terrible lol, it didn't upscaled anything.
