Acer XB270HU vs Asus MG279Q ?

Hey guys.

After getting my money back from my monitor due to dust being inside it, i'm wondering now which monitor between these 2 should I take ?

As far as I have researched bot monitors look roughly the same where Acer's one has G-Sync and more expensive because of it and Asus' one has Freesync where it is cheaper because of it.

I have a MSI GTX 980 Ti and while you may now go instantly say to take Acer's one due to me owning a NVIDIA GPU and the monitor having G-Sync, please keep in mind that I really don't care about this Sync Technology, because how much I researched it seems that the higher the FPS goes (like 100+) the more the syncs technology effect diminishes.

And the games I play most are either old school games (like Thief 1, Thief 2, D&D Games etc...) or some not so demanding games like Dota 2 , CS GO, SC2 etc...

The prices for both monitors are:

Acer - 780 EU (886$)

Asus - 570 EU (647$)

I can see that Acer's one would prove more useful for newer games with G-Sync where GTX 980 Ti pushes games between 50-100 FPS, but the Asus' advantage is being cheaper.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

I don't really know between those two, but earlier this week I sent back an Asus VG248QE because the colour reproduction was absolutely terrible and the black bleed was some of the worst i have EVER seen on a panel. I'd think the Asus one would be fine, but try looking into some reviews. I'll take a look later today as I don't exactly have time now.

Thanks for the reply Gorbaz, I already checked reviews for both the monitors from TFTCentral, they kinda really are same with also Acer having blur motion reduction which I don't know will I even notice it.

Well both are IPS panels and reading up on the specs of both I would go for the Acer. Its got G-Sync (Even if you don't care its a good tech to have if the choices are with or without), very similar specs, and a similar build quality. I have had both Acer and Asus monitors past and present and presently they are both excellent monitor makers.

I would get the Acer if those were my options.

$240 is a big difference in cost that I don't think you will "see". If you have that kind of money burning a hole in your pocket, where else could you use it? More RAM? SSD? New games that take advantage of Freesync?

Well , I have alot to spend those $240 , not necessarily on PC components, but on some other hobbies aswell, so I don't know are those $240 worth it for the Acer.

I have a few impressions for you.

G-Sync is not the 'mega-gamechanger' that I was lead to believe.

I went from a 110hz Qnix to the 144hz Acer and the Acer has much higher IQ (IMO).

I cannot tell the difference between 144hz vs 120hz ULMB (ULMB only works at 85hz, 100hz, and 120hz), but I can tell you that when you enable ULMB the screen is much darker and I have not been able to find a good calibration to make it very usable.

Also keep in mind that if eventually you decide to go SLI you will NOT be able to enable Down Sample Resolution (DSR) in NVCP with the Acer. There is no way to completely disable G-Sync (or make NVCP see the Acer as non-Gsync compatible) so DSR + SLI is a no go on Gsync capable monitors.

Since you are playing older games and only have 1 gpu I think you would enjoy the Acer's picture quality at 144hz and be able to use DSR to play at 4k (or more) and still keep the refresh rate at 144hz!

There are still build quality issues with the Acer and there are people who have gone through many of them in order to find one without defects. I was fortunate in getting one with no dead pixels and only a slight amount of BLB on the top left and bottom right of the panel.

If I had to do it again I would get one that does NOT have G-sync so that I can use DSR and SLI without issues. Plus you would save some money.

By the description of your needs in your opening post, I don't think it is worth it. Note the ASUS is already a great monitor and according to Guru3D, it uses the exact same AUO AHVA panel as the Acer XB270HU. The ASUS has a 3 year warranty where the Acer only 2. And the ASUS also has integrated speakers which would not interest me but might you.

So is $240 more for a feature you said you don't care about really worth it?

There are 144Hz panels out there that are neither G-Sync nor FreeSync. If you are looking at getting a high refresh rate monitor and do not care to have either technology those options are cheaper yet and will serve you well.

And as a rule I would get the Acer because of G-Sync and you having an nVidia card anyway. You say you don't care about it now, but there will be games coming out that you will want to play, and your GPU will not be able to cope at 1440P with extremely high framerates.

Hey guys, what about PG279Q , is it worth it to wait for it at Q4 and or for G-Sync ?

I doubt it will be cheaper than Acer XB270HU.

Ehh, what?

Pretty much all the games that you want to have in 144Hz are very light on the GPU...

The Asus looks like a very good monitor, but the factory calibration looks pretty rubbish although that is something you can fix when you get it.

Did you read the quote? I was talking about future titles.

As it was already said, if you don't care about adaptive sync, Gsync or Freesync, just look around for any monitor that offers the best picture quality and 144Hz. You might get an even cheaper monitor than the Asus, or a bigger one or one with better picture quality.

From those two the 980Ti screams GSync but I think the price difference is huge and the games you play don't need it. Also you can buy a second monitor with that money and have a dual monitor setup. Hell you can buy a 32'' TV and screw it it on the wall to watch your movies on a bigger screen. Not to mention that it wouldn't be surprising if Nvidia decides to support Adaptive Sync in the future without a module, making the 980Ti compatible with Freesync. But they are arrogant and stubborn and probably I wish for too much.

I use a BenQ XL2720Z 144hz, and it games completely fine for me. They have a nice XR3501 curved screen out as well.
