$17,000 per day = $6 million and some change per year. At $60,000 for your average game development studio per year, that comes to earning enough money in a year to pay for 103 employees in said year. They have 261. The revenue needs to be more than doubled to sustain their base spending rate. Nevermind licensing, building rent/utilities, cost of relocating employees, employee termination packages, taxes, and so on.

The 17k/day is the current average (or was, before the endevor ship sale that's returned us to normal funding levels), which has dropped the last couple of months as summer tends to be the worst time for CIG funding. Last year they broke $6mil in the month of November alone (November being the anniversary sale time and CIG's best month of the year traditionally). If you ignore the last couple of relatively quiet months they've been hitting 3+ mil a month, so we're really looking at this years' takings to be over $30 million.

Holy shit, whoever is designated for sound effects in this game did almost the impossible. Those sounds and voice in the exploding corridor actually sound correct for the place player is in. Something I've last seen in games that were powered by Creative's EAX. Amazing. :D

I've seen some pretty heavy complaining over devs of this game and their progress vs costs so far, but if they are chasing this level of details and they've only been working on it for what, 4 years now? 4 years is not a lot for a company that isn't established like big juggernauts like EA. And usually even they don't go into such crazy levels of detail...

It's a new game, still in production that is heavy on visuals. I think you're friend will need at least GTX 980 or R9-390X to really properly enjoy the game...

Good lord, I'm just getting a 970 now.... I think I'll just not tell him......
Is this a port? A 980 is 700can up here, really, you need that much to play this?

Only thing I can think of is to remember when Crysis came out. Most cards struggled. This is being made exclusively for PC. Yeah, we're going to need a lot to play this.. though I don't have issues playing below 60fps if my wallet is thin. :)

OK, the stuff from Squadron 42 was legit!

Yeah it was great! One thing they need to change though, is to make Gary Oldman look older so it matches his voice. Hopefully they'll do something about that, it kinda threw me off.

One thing is just being able to play it and another actually enjoying it. I'm not a graphics whore, I'm more crazy about sounds, interactivity and stuff, but I just can't enjoy a game which I know looks amazing, but I'd be running it with everything on LOW. I just can't do that, that's why I spend big(ger) money on graphic cards.

I don't mind playing 1998 game in 2015 and I'll enjoy it's visuals like it's a brand new game, but I have to run it at max settings with FSAA and AF.

I do recall reading that they did a lot of texture optimization for the next patch. Hopefully that will lead to some good/modest gains in performance. DX12 should help too once that is implemented. That being said a 970 and that Xeon should work pretty well!

I'm really disappointed I've been unable to find a second Sapphire for cheap: dreading what the full monster will do to my poor old box.

Just got back from Citizencon - really awesome event, and what they showcased was pretty damned cool. Chris and the rest of the team seemed really happy and excited to talk to fans, which was great. I left around midnight, and there must have been a queue of over 100 people still waiting in line for a signature from the man himself so goodness knows when he finished for the day (he's really nice in person - super friendly and genuine).

New ship got announced during the event - the Aegis Sabre which is at the same level as an Anvil superhornet, but instead of being able to take a beating it's designed to be more maneuverable and stealthier in combat, so I grabbed one. There's also a new affiliate scheme, which was the only item not too popular announced (due in part to many at the event already having signed all their friends up and having no way to get recognition) - if you do get a friend to sign up use the affiliate system and you'll get credit, your mate will get free UEC and if you sign enough people up there's ships and other goodies as rewards.

Depending what he has, 480 may still be a big upgrade so I'd still consider it. I doubt it would be good enough for Star Citizen though. That's about as old as my 5870 and that card struggled at 1920x1200.

I like Derek Smart because of all the truth bombs he dropped during GamerGate SPJ AirPlay, but I frankly don't understand why he's after Star Citizen so much. That exploding corridor alone was more impressive than most complete retail games I've seen in last few years...

From what I gather, CIG terminated Derek Smart's account and offered a refund of $250 without notifying him of a breach in Terms of Service. I think CIG had/has an obligation to explain why they made that decision and whether or not it was correct. I can see how Derek Smart would be pissed; I certainly would were I in his shoes. The thing is, it should have been a private affair between Smart and CIG; it should have never been made public. I don't know "who started it" but both sides can rightfully be accused of acting stupidly.

The explosions...are they part of the "commercials" or are the part of the game engine and can dynamically be applied to any ship model in real time? If the former, it's wasted money (we bought a game, not a movie); if it's the latter, is it really worth the production costs? I think most of us would rather see a world full of a variety of ships as opposed to a small number of highly detailed ships. Don't get me wrong; it is pretty but on my give-a-fuck scale, it's pretty low. Eye candy only entertains so long before it becomes benign.

FYI, I'm not considering requesting a refund--I'm just skeptical. We see bits and pieces of the game here and there but, for example, why haven't they pushed out a crude persistent universe by now? The low level technologies required for a persistent universe should be in public alpha by now so the multiplayer implementations of technologies like dynamic explosions can be tested for network loads. Starting with pretties and working backwards to core technologies is always a recipe for disaster. We already know that the most important features (Squadron 42 and persistent universe) has been pushed to 2016 at the earliest when they were originally intended for 2014.

I don't really care if it isn't finished until 2018 as long as it is finished.

The burden of proof is on CIG. If they deliver what was promised then the naysayers are wrong.

As for the Persistent Universe, the project status page says "design" phase which means it is almost definitely going to get pushed until 2016 at the earliest.
