I love my battletablet 7" Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet. Ultrathin... fast, HD screen, and waterproof (didn't know until after buying!) it was around 220 €. They may have a 9" for about 300 bucks....

Shield Tablet is pretty good. Cloud and PC to tablet game streaming (with Nvidia GPU). 8 inches 1920x1200, Tegra K1, microSD slot, front facing speakers. Pretty consistent updates. It's on 5.1.1 right now.

Asus ZenPad S 8.0. It sells for only $199 or so, but it's the best less expensive Android tablet I've seen. Also, refurb iPad Mini 2 or 3.

THIS tablet has served me well for over a year, and functions Perfectly as a Ebook reader among other things too. speed is good, Gpu is decent, and expandable to 32 or 64 Gb's via SD micro. Plus its a samsung. not to mention they are Sub $200 ... i bought the 10.1" one as well for my mother in law, and the 8" is plenty good, i like it better.

Tell us what it is going to be used for, because there are many tablets of various classes in this price range, from power-hungry gaming monsters, to very light and less powerful "general purpose" tablets, to purely productivity-oriented convertibles.

In my opinion $300 is a bit of an overkill for kid's tablet, but here we go:
1) Asus MeMo Pad ME302KL ~$250. Basically it is identical to 2013 Nexus 7, but with a 10.1" screen. Tops
2) Get him NVidia Shield an he will be the happiest kid in the world. Tegra K1 and purely game-oriented design

Also I seem to be unable to find XIAOMI tablets in places like Amazon or Newegg, even though they are already flooded with chinese crap.

If you can find Xiaomi MiPad - it will be a good choice. They make some very nice hardware lately, and MiPad is no exception. It is powered by Tegra K1, just like Shield and Nexus 9[10], but includes a bad-ass retina display (most likely one of the new LG screens). Tops the Antutu benchmark chart. Xiaomi devices aren't cheap, but in the last year or two I noticed that lately people are leaning towards this brand because of ever-rising prices on Samsung phones tablets, and continuous hardware problems with Asus and HTC. US gets much better quality HTC products, BTW, so do not be discouraged.

Have you considered any windows 8 tablet? They could do a lot more without costing much. It uses Intel bay trail atom CPUs.

Since it was necroed anyway, the Shield tablet dropped to $200. The new cheaper version no longer comes with a stylus or a charger but otherwise it's the same. Nvidia has also announced that the Shield tablet will get Marshmallow in the next couple months.
