900w real power not enought for 1 R9 280X.

I did an upgrade on my gpu.
I whent from CFX 6770s ( both pull 200 watts) to R9 280x Dual X from Sapphire.

My old gpus ram fine on my Hantol 900w PSU which has 60A on 2 12v rails (30 on each).
But the R9 just keeps freezing my PC from time to time.

Now i know this GPU is power hungry, but 900w real power cant hold one of these gpus?

Here are detailed spec from my PSU:
3,3v and 5v - 22A both = 160W
2 +12V - 30A each = 720W
-12V - 0.5A = 6W
5Vsb - 3A = 15W

It should handle 2 280x's with not problem, did you perform a full display driver whipe before swapping to the 280x?

Do you trust the seller?

That card might have been mining or just well used. Your PSU should be fine, unless it too is very old.

All things considered, if it's not drivers (or an OS conflict, or something software related) - I'd not trust the card.

Going by the label they don't trust more than 204 W on one line and that is not enough. Dual Core support...hmmm

I get freezes from time to time, and the weirdest thing is it freezes when i browse the internet or do some basic stuff with it.
I get freezes too when chamging graphic settings in games, but never when gaming.
Here are my simptoms.

It is a 2 year old PSU, new bought. I saw those figures on the picture, same as mine, but PSU is not even coil whining, or heating up when gamed with the card yesterday. It has the nesesary gpu 8 and 6 pin conectors.
GPU was used for graphical design. I bought it from a company.
Maybe i could get a molex to 6 pin conector to plug in from another cable since both pins on PSU come from same rail.

Look for the XFX thread on a 280X/380 (can remember which, last 10 days). 2D speed might be to low. A XFX bios fix raising that clock and that might fix it.

Edit: Sorry but I can't find the thread. Bottom line was that our XFX guy said that the 2D clock on (his) card might be to low. What you see is 2D problems, not power supply problems because they will show in 3D mode (high clock). I will however second the comment above that your old and no-name PSU is nearing EOL.

Extra edit: This PSU is close to 10 years old, not 2 years.

After thinking a little, i thought about the problem and i think i found the solution:
Both of the pins ( 8 and 6 pin) for the gpu come from 1 12v rail, so maybe, 1 rail cant give it enought power, but if i get a 6pin or 8 pin from molex adapter and plug it on another rail,maybe it will get enought power to run for good.

That could only be the issue if it is the same 12v rail that is used for the motherboard, which is highly unlikely, try the driver whipe.

I will try the driver whipe, and ill get an adapter for the 6 pin conector to get power from a molex.
If the adapter works ill leave it like that cause im now close to sure that the GPU pins only come from 1 12v rail, not both combined which is a problem since 204W is not enought for this GPU to run.

highly unlikely 204W would not be enough for that card ... i ran a R9 290 (clocked 1150/1500) on 600W 650W and 750W without any issue, tho those PSU were from CoolerMaster, Fractal Design and Seasonic, ok now i have a 980 on the same 750W tho it's a single rail 744W 62A rating on the +12V

as i said once about your PSU it's under "do not buy" list in many tech site and it's totally not a 900W real power

379W mostly even by doubling all rail that have dual setup it give 743W which is still 157W less than what they advertise, plus the reputation of that brand, it's a no go for anyone looking for reliability.

this is your actual system estimation, which make me think that PSU is indeed 379W max since you have problem to power a system that would need ~494W on a 8hrs daily basis

dont waste time with drivers - Just get rid of that PSU. If you google that 900W for reviews you will find that 99% of reviews are negative 1star reviews - 1star because they couldnt rate the PSU any lower.

Hantol are the same people who are selling a 600w PSU for $35 - Get rid of that peice of junk before that PSU gets rid of your entire PC when it blows up. Grab a decent unit from Corsair, Avoid their CX range.

Just my opinion... that brand of PSU is not known as the best... to put it nicely.

That R9 280X Dual X can use up to 280 to 300 watts at peak use.
I believe your PSU is the problem.
204 watts max on those two rails just ain't cutting it.

Shit psu... 10 year old psu. 204we on each 12v rails from. 900W psu...that's old school spec. I'd look there first honestly.

I wouldn't avoid cx. It's certianly not the best, but it will be fine in most cases. It's a better budget offering than what he has.. that's for sure.

In that case good sir, Myself and the rest of us here at TPU wish you the best of luck - Hopefully you wont comeback to the forums and crying for help after your Hantol blows up and takes almost all the other components with it as It seems you dont care for investing in quality hardware for your own usage. I doubt anyone else here will waste the effort trying to help someone who is asking for help but wont listen to advice given.

Maybe...
Card is secondhand.
I noticed PSU is not strugling, since 12v rail doesn't drop below 11.9 on the quick stress tests i did before card crashes.
Other values stay good
5v not below 4.9.
3.3 not below 3.2.

That is why i defend my "faulty, not good branded" PSU.

Reading a little, i more suspect in the card than my PSU, since is 2 years old now, and used for graphical design by first user.
