First up is Heatware: http://heatware.com/eval.php?id=63394

Okay, here is the deal. I have a client looking to have a mITX build for an HTPC.

I have a mini case, hard drive, and memory.

Well, now we are on to finding a fairly cheap Intel Socket 1150 chip. I'm thinking an i3 or G3258 or something in that area.

The motherboard is taken care of so the above chip requirements are needed now.

So, shoot me what ya got and price shipped and lets see if we can all make this happen for this fella. :p

Thanks in advance,
stinger

In my own experience, lga 775 and 1366 mITX were never popular and none of boards I recall were decent enough. There weren't a big enough selection to begin with, either. I recall having few Intel 775 boards and the issues were video that never lasted long enough and would eventually start to malfunction.

I think it was Sandy bridge where mITX really caught up quality wise with introduction of iGPU.

I do have two lga 1150 setups with i3-4130 + mITX +8gb which I might put up for sale soon but that isn't going to happen in few months.

Yea, now that you mention that, I seem to remember mITX never being popular until the Sandy Bridge era.
Thanks for pointing that out man. :rockout:

A quick search on eBay reveals plenty of mITX options for 775 and 1156. Hell, ASUS had some killer mITX 1156 boards. I'm sure somebody will have one lying around.

If it is just for a HTPC, you might consider an AM1 setup. They are practically made for HTPC duty.

Stinger608,

The only 1156 board that I liked were the Intel DH57JG(picked up my last one on [H] from you know who), I also owned the DFI LanParty board...from my perspective there wasn't much else that was worthwhile in the 1156 skt. As far as LGA 775, the only board that I'm aware of that we're commonly used we're the Zotac boards(dodgy wi-fi). The Intel "fly creek" and others didn't have a pci-e x16 slot. It's been awhile and my memory may be failing me...but that's what I recall from that era and I was quite active in purchasing all of the mini-itx motherboards at the time.

As previously mentioned...Sandy Bridge is where mini-itx really took off...I had very good luck with the Intel DH67CF and the DQ67EP from Intel. At times you can find different sellers dumping multiples of these boards for dirt cheap on ebay...and at other times...they're asking a mint for them.

Good luck with the hunt!

:),

Actually one of our own member here as well as [H], @DaedalusHelios ,
pointed out a couple of items that would frigging work awesome:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...a&cm_sp=&AID=10440897&PID=3891137&SID=rewrite

http://www.macmall.com/p/product~dpno~9961225~pdp.ifheaed

At around $70 it would be a great deal I think.

My only concern is that I think he has Steam and plays Steam games. So having that system hooked to the TV I imagine he will probably run Steam. No idea if that 5350 would be any good for running games.

And I agree with ya @Liquid Cool , the Sandy Bridge is where mITX really took a huge jump up in the market and became very popular as a lot of people were building gaming systems with them........However I think money wise it would be out of his
budget to try and put together a decent Sandy Bridge system. Unless I could find a good board and i3 chip cheap.

I guess my next dilemma is the power supply. The case that I currently have for him is an old Shuttle case..........Can't remember off the top of my head what it is. It was one of the bare bone systems from back in the Core2Duo era but holds a mITX board. Looks like it has one of them very small mini power supplies. I'm not even sure if a regular SFF type power supply would fit. I think it is one of the skinny long type of power supplies. Dang, I need to find out for sure. :p

As far as I know, Shuttle SFF uses Flex PSU. The last one I had a 80+ bronze Flex PSU. If your shuttle still has its PSU, use it.
What I would make sure is that your shuttle case has a removable I/O shield. I haven't used a shuttle barebone for more than 4 years but do recall having some of them integrated I/O on rear.

If your pal's budget is that tight, it's probably better going with AMD since they do offer far superior GPU performance per dollar compared to Intel.

The case doesn't have a power supply in it. It also has the removable I/O shield. Hmm, I think that is right that the case takes the Flex style PSU.

With a stand alone video card it would be fine with the onboard? No chance in hell it's essentially a laptop CPU even with mine overclocked it can't play modern games above 720P at low settings.

Would probably blow the budget. I think that board will be sold soon.
Would be awesome to put together a kickass build with that if mainstream high end procs werent 400$, blame AMD for sucking and giving no competition lol.

If this latest guy doesn't buy it, I'm storing it until the IRE Summer Deal (which should be SkyLake) and building it.

It's not in your list but I have a G1830 that is actually serving in my Bedroom HTPC? It's running on a Windows 10 w/ MCE mod and takes Plex streams without issue. PM me if interested.

@stinger608 - if you haven't already gotten it... I'm going to buy a i7-4790K for the Kreij MB/CPU rig and would be glad to hand over the G3258 to you. It's very happy at 4.5 Ghz.
