Having a problem with games freezing.

I read through dozens of posts all over the net to try and find a solution, to no avail. So with no where left to go, I decided to post on here myself.

So, about six months ago I built this system, Everything ran fine, watched videos fine, surfed the web fine. Games however, are hit and miss. Half the games I run are ok, the other half, not ok. Lately all the games I've been playing have been having freezing issues, Act of Aggression, Xcom 2, Life is strange, Ark, etc.
So, hopefully you guys will be able to help me out.

Freezing - Random times during play, game screen locks with mouse moveable and music playing, then mouse locks while music still playing, and after a long while later, music stops. Only way out is a Hard Reset.

System: OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Hard disk - Hitachi 2tb Hard drive
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Processor - i7-4790k 4GHz
Ram - Original Ram: Corsair Vengence Pro 16 gig DDR 3 2400MHz 1.65v, Then recently installed cheap PNY PC3-14900 16 gig DDR 3 1866MHz 1.5v to replace Corsairs and rule out mem issue.
Motherboard - Asus Z97-A (recently replaced with same model to rule out MB issue.)
Power Supply - APEVIA Warlock 1100w

No Dump files recorded, Latest drivers on GPU (with all old deleted.)

So this is what I got, any other info you guys need let me know. Hopefully this can be resolved, Its supposed to be a half decent gaming machine, but kinda worthless if it wont play the games lol.

I don't see how a defrag would help here - not with a 2TB drive and W7.

What are your temps? Have you scanned for malware? And I would swap in another PSU for testing to make sure this is not a power issue.

1 Mal detected, WinYahoo browser attachment. Removed and restarted. the PSU is an upgrade, forgot to mention it, original was a 700w same brand. The 1100w was installed two days ago. General running temps are between 26 - 36c. Temp during game, CPU - 38c, GPU - 65c, which was tested just a little bit ago, ran XCOM 2, game froze five minutes in. Then tried Act of Aggression, ten minutes in it froze.

And this problem was happening with the 700W PSU too?

Your temps are great. You replaced your RAM and apparently your PSU too with same results.

How long will the system stay up with just normal use - surfing the Internet, reading email, etc.?

Exact same problem with with the 700 as well. And the system will run forever essentially with normal use. I can surf the web, mess with programs, watch videos with no problem what so ever.

Download a graphics benchmark such as Unigine Valley and loop it to see if that creates the same problems. Not very CPU or RAM dependent but might isolate the gpu as the problem.

And if not the GPU, the motherboard! :(

I always try to rule out all other causes before I tell some one they have to go buy new hardware. But the card going out is a possibility.

not when it means wasting time and money on other options purely because they seem cheaper.. so far everything else on the planet has been suggested in this thread.. except the obvious.. hence my semi jokey comment about it being against the rules.. :)

First pass went fine, second pass froze up. This saddens me, was kinda hoping it was something else cause vid cards are not cheap! Going to see if I cant borrow a test replacement from a buddy tomorrow to see if that is really the case, I will post and update then to let everyone know if that was truely the cause.

you could try reducing the cards clock speed by a small amount..

Well looks like the obvious was the culprit after all. Used my buddie's GPU, same exact one I have, and played a good 45 mins straight of Xcom 2. Looks like I'll be heading out to grab a new one. Thanks everyone for the help, sorry such a simple solution was the cause.

so far everything else on the planet has been suggested in this thread.. except the obvious.

Actually, @the54thvoid already suggested running Unigine Valley, which is almost completely GPU-dependant, in order to help isolate the GPU as the problem.
