Should I buy an 8600 GTS, a 8800 GTS, or an x1950xt 512mb? I'm looking in the $250 range.

I found a 8800 GTS for like $269 on newegg. I might go with this.

The 8800GTS is worth what you pay for it over top of the X1950XT. Go for that. I've had them both, and I can tell you that the 8800GTS is much better.

Alright, I'm convinced I'm going to buy this card. Only problem is I need to get a PSU if I want it... I think Fox34 has a 450watt kicking aroung I could borrow...

I just looked at a review for that card. Pure amazing bang to buck ratio.

Agreed. However you'll have to work on your processor too...

Processor you are getting will be fine, though you might be better off going with the 320MB version. As for PSU, yeah, you will definately need a better QUALITY one.

Yes...the 8800GTS will be very bottlenecked in a computer with no CPU...I imagine a 3dmark06 score of 0.

The box says 400w and 26A on the +12 rail FYI.

I would say 8600GTS, because the processor you are getting WILL bottleneck the other choices. Look at me, I got an 8800GTS and i get 80K in Aquamark (Pentium 4:banghead:).
There was another guy in this forum with an 8800GTS that was being bottlenecked by an X2 6000.:shadedshu

It will bottleneck the 8800, but it will still easily outperform any of the other choices.

I dont know about that cooler on this card.... I would ask around to see if it would work. You can see how big the waterblock is, it cover the mem and everything else.

Plus that thing looks pretty big, will it take up three slots?

I mean, I am not trying to talk you out of interest of mine.... I just dont want you to get it and not be able to use it

Why buy the Opty when u can buy an E4300 for the exact same price? At least 1.5x the performance out of the box, and overclocking can get u much much higher.

I think he wants to keep his existing motherboard

You might be best off selling your current 1gb kit and getting a new 2gb kit. Mixed ram doesnt usually work too well in dual channel.

The RAM I plan on buying is the same exact thing. And yes, I can either get a new mobo and cpu and RAM, then be stuck with an x600xt for a while, or get all this shit, and in a month or so sell my mobo and cpu for a new mobo and E6700.
