X1900GT vs. HD2600 vs. Something Green

I am looking for a single slot DX10 solution for my rig. I currently have a X1900GT and looking at the specs of the HD2600 it doesn't seem like a worthy upgrade. But then again I am a noob. I dont mind buying something green but I prefer ATI. Any suggestions? :respect:

The HD2600 is DX10 compatible, but performance wise (ie gaming), it wont be as good as your X1900GT (IMHO), you would be better off saving some cash, selling the X1900GT (on ebay or to a friend

) and getting the HD X2900XT

I'd agree, except he's looking for a single slot solution, something that isn't offered by the hd 2600. You could consider that dual hd 2600 that I've seen pictures of somewhere though, the only issue I see there is driver support.

I was going to do that but I need a single slot solution. I HD2900 is duel slot.

Isn't the cooler on it the only thing making it a dual slot card? If so, buy the card, ditch the stock cooler for a Zalman or something, then enjoy.

Agree with Bigboi. You could even do that with the HD2900XT. Youd just have to cut off that little grille they got on there to let air out of the case.

HD2600 on paper looks like total crap.. without any reviews about atm, my vote is on a 8800GTS 320\640MB.

I don't know what nvidia did with the 320 in between my first one that died and the second one I got yesterday. This new one maxes out at 55c and can break 11,000 in 3dmark06. I would recommend that, but it's going to be hard to turn that into a single slot solution.

8800GTS looks great. However I need a single slot solution. If I thought I could get away with duel slot I would just get an HD2900.

It still will take up two slots. Just not two of the expansion cutouts

The 7950GT isnt DX10 compatible!!!! Only the 8xxx series cards are (from nVIDIA)

To TheMailMan78 - what about the "8600GTS 256MB", thats single slot and is DX10 compatible

Yeah thats right, I ment it would play DX10 games that will run without DX10 hardware features... Much like DX9 games usally run on a DX8 cards. You won't get the pretty eye-candy!

You might get away with a VF900 or VF1000 fitted to a 88GTS, their both supposed to be very slim.

I have a zalman vf900 on my x800. It does use two slots which kinda sucks in my matx case, but what can you do...

My sound card kinda blocks airflow to the fan on the vf900, so I was looking at maybe getting a half height sound card, or something.

120 Stream processors and 24 Shaders VS 36 Stream processors... speaks for itself doesnt it? HD2600XT has a single slot cooler.

Remember everyone around here saying just go x800 and so on. Now that games are starting to want SM3.0 only and they are up shit creek.

Not saying everything will go DX10 only, but you never know.

The 8600 series are inferior to their 79xx cards performance wise, same for the 2600 compared to the X19xx series, by the time proper (properly optimized) DX10 games are out you'll probably want a new card anyway.

Recent demos of 1st gen. DX10 game shows even a 8800GTX card struggling to run it at high resolution with decent frame rates, imagine the kind of slide show you'll see with the 8600 and x2600 cards!

I'd suggest either a 7900GS/GT or a X1900GT/X1950GT instead.

As I said, the HD2600XT has not been released, theoretically it is faster than the previous generation... This new architecture is faster regardless of the bit bus, it would be costly to go for a 256bit unified.

Neveretheless you do realize that Nvidia sucks at making drivers that are good for their purpose, and AMD are getting it together...

He has a X1900GT anyway... dude just wait for the HD2600XT to come out, then we talk dont invest in something that seems like somewhat a gamble.
