I agree that pipes are not everything, but without greatly increasing clock speeds, making an even smaller gpu (70nm, 60nm, etc), or making it a 512 bit card, I don't see a way they could greatly increase performance without increasing pipelines.

I said before how pipes do make a huge difference, but they are not everything. But in ATI case, they made it up by increasing to high clock rates. Almost reminds me of Intels Netburst, and IPC's. Even though its not the same thing, it could almost be simular.

As much as I like ATI, Nvidia is on my "buying list", its just not worth the extra moeny for the X1800. So untill ATI decides to drop prices, well...

This was a dumb thread AMDCam, No offense, but do some more research. They are pretty much tied as far as performance goes.

They both have their ups and downs, matter of fact the X1800XT outbeat the 7800GTX in 3dmark05 by 1300+ points. It's the highest scoring single card for 3dmark05 available. It only outdid the 7800GTX in 3dmark03 by about 600points..

Just because it has only 16pipelines doesn't mean jack. It also has better image quality, I've seen screenshots of both cards on highest settings in halflife 2 on another forum, and it amazed me.

I think they are equal cards for the most part, in real games they are neck and neck, you can't really say one "Pwns" the other.

EDIT: Gollum, Dan obviously tries his best to use complete sentences and grammar, you correcting him like that makes you out to be an asshole.

The bottom line is, it is a better card, faster and better image quality.

Well So Far The new ATI arcutecture supports the new gddr4 format but will not be able to to take advantage until later revisions when the memory becomes available from the manufactures. So that should be a big boost there . Isnt that supposed to run around 1.5 ghz or better??. Hell the 1800 xt hasnt really even come out yet So When it dose fully revised I imagine it should offer alot more on tap for us,and even when the developers can get some hands on time with the hardware should help us alot. In my oppion One good thing came of all of this for some of us though,Everyone likes the Nvidias Transparency AA In the quality end aswell as performance, but is only good to go on 7x cards. ATI's Adaptive AA while still in early stages will run on all newer or recent cards which should help us get a little more out of the frps/quality setting camp. So I Think ATI will do just fine and once the 1800 512MB is able to be run with a 7800 512MB mem card hopfully The new X serries is matured a bit. Hope The X-Fire Config Dose Well also. Just my thoughts in response to some dissapointed ATI fans to not lose heart. MD.

Also The way in which ATI makes use of those 16 pipes with different controlers and stuff is pretty cool too.

ati and nvidia both make good products.

I bought a x850pro and flashed to 16 pipes.. I get 6235 in 3dmark05 for $300 canadian. I just buy the best for the cheapest. I helped my friend build a system and recommended a 7800gtx because it's the 'best'. Who cares about stupid video cards. It's all about playing the games anyway.

I just skimmed though the AnandTech review of the X1800's and I'm leaning more towards the x1800 XT now. It performs better in higher resolutions with the features turned up, which is how I like to play my games. So I think it would be to my benefit to get the XT instead. Now whether or not I'll get a Crossfire motherboard is a whole different thing.

im going with the x1800xl and a crossfire mobo, (unless someone finds out that crossfire works on SLI motherboards). but yeah the price is to much right now, wait till probably late November early December they will probably drop to be competitive. OH and ATI is only selling the x1k series right, Add in board partners arent on the ball yet!

a) that's really not going to happen - you need a chipset that supports crossfire and even in the unlikely event that nforce4 sli had everything required to do so nvidia would never release a driver update to allow it.
b) partners are selling x1k series cards.

What you said makes no sense, why wouldn't he be able to get a crossfire motherboard and run X1800XTs in crossfire?

No - he would. But I was refering to him saying maybe crossfire will work in SLi motherboards.

Oh my god, I completely revert my statement on X1800's sucking lol. I am glad I made the thread though, or else I would still hate ATI for really no reason. 16pp does suck, but great OC'ing capability redeems it that much? Crazy, crazy. Although I'd love to see an overclocked 7800GTX, I mean that should probably kill.

I seen the X1800XT run 860mhz.. doubt the nvidia will do that...
