HELP - A transistor burnt out on my mobo!

I have a ASUS P5AD2 Premium and I think my power supply went nuts cause I turned on my computer and heard a high pitched noise and then this part on my motherboard sparked.

The computer still operates but not normally, the high pitched noise comes from the power supply still and the 3.3v and 5v rails are BOTH sitting at around 1.45v...

Now heres where it gets weird, the mobo still works, surf the web, play a movie, play Oblivion etc just fine. Run Orthos and it instantly fails.

I found a stock image of the mobo and circled which part is burnt out:

If anyone knows where I can get a replacement, like which model transistor that is (I think its a transistor anyways) I'd be very happy. Or if someone wants to buy it for cheap ($35) and tinker with it, the board is fine except for that one thing.

Id see if you can contact Asus and RMA it. also, with that PSU its odd that its squeeling.

idk where you can buy a transistor/resistor, but you should be able to read some stuff on the top, unless the top blew off or something, in that case, good luck finding out what goes there, you'll have to find a schematic. what about RMAing it? oh and the PSU may be squealing because the load on the 3.3 and 5v lines aren't correct, so you may be killing your psu at the same time (that's my guess why it's squealing)

Sadly the board is way out of its warranty/RMA period, its like 3 years old. Its my secondary gaming rig...

The actual part itself burnt out in the middle, theres like a big crater in the center where the writing used to be.

Its actually a MOFSET and yes indeed that motherboard Is out of the warranty and discontinued.

Got another PSU to try? I would GUESS that your PSU maybe fine and that FET is shorting your 5V and 3.3V rails to ground.

Power supplies let out a high pitched squeel when they get shorted...I do it for shits and giggles at work sometimes.

If you try another psu and it still squeels, I would just remove the FET in question and see if the board still works.

My bro burnt one on his asus board when he connected his fan controller (with 4 fans hooked up) into his chassis1 fan connector. Smoked it instantly. Board still works fine, just can't use the chassis 1 connector.

Maybe their is a 3-pin fan connector you're not using? Looks like a different FET though....

I once knocked off a small transistor from the back of a 7800GT, and it ran fine without it. I was able to solder it back on without a problem, but it made me wonder how much redundancy is built into modern computer equipment? I've seen motherboards with oozing blown caps that still powered on. Something to ponder...

I will try removing it and see what happens, thanks guys. Also assuming I am resourceful enough to find out what model of MOSFET died, if I replace it everything in theory should be okay?

The only reason I care so much is this motherboard, while getting outdated, still goes for $125+ on ebay and has many nice feature sets most new motherboards don't have.

MOSFETs are quite easy to solder in and out so it's not far fetched at all to sell it to someone capable of repairing it.
The problem is they won't pay you $35 for it...

Maybe that one right next to it is the same type, and you could use that part number to order the new one.

It's not very wise to assume the chips are the same...
Usually the partnumber is etched on the MOSFET so I suggest you try to clean the part and maybe use a digital camera with a good macro to find out the part number.

Yea I can't see the number the middle of the MOSFET is gone, right in the middle of the numbers. I was able to disconnect the two main "legs" of the unit but the top section, the wide base which is soldered on is being more stubborn, I'm thinking my soldering iron isn't hot enough for that.

However since the MOSFET isn't making a complete circuit, I'm not going to bother taking it all off and am just going to test it as is.

Given the choice between guessing the part number out of the blue (OP stated, "The actual part itself burnt out in the middle, theres like a big crater in the center where the writing used to be."), or using the part number of the device next to it, it makes more sense to try going with the part number next o it, hence my suggestion.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to also look at the circuit traces to give confidence in the assumption that it is the same device as it's neighbor.
