PSP TV Addon Unveiled

Sony in an effort to upgrade the usability of psp to more than just a handheld console announced today in Tokyo the availability of a new Tuner addon ( 1Seg compliant only for now ) for which can turn the system into a portable TV that's capable of receiving digital television broadcasts.The TV Tuner will go on sale on 9/20 at a cost of 6,980 yen. It will only be compatible with the new PSP-2000 redesign, so current PSP owners are out of luck.

wtf? thats ridiculous! they cant do this =(
i wont buy a new one, but i would have buyed the gadget, so i wouldnt have to use the laptop in small trains, at uni etc....

yepp but gamegear was analog with antenna (correct me if i am wrong)

buts only time to do this, gamegear must have been cool, but as i was too young at thi stime, i was with the gameboy (the good old grey one with 4batteries =) fan base.

I think SONY must have seen me bitching about the lack of decent accessories (& I compared it to Game Gear with their TV tuner)

hats off to sony for finally bringing out a usefull accessory other then letting other manufacturers run wild with theirdocking stations, travel cases & speakers etc....

good job now lets hope the reception on that thing is good lol tho i really think not if thats the size of the aerial...

I wouldn't worry about that thing not working with older PSP's... it will be done! I'll have my brother ship me one from Japan when they come out. I have a feeling the difference will be the interface plug or slot. Hell, I'm getting a smaller psp too.

Too bad dude, TechPowerUP did a sorry job reporting this news. This tuner is designed to work with 1SEG digital TV broadcast (only available in japan). So, this tuner will not work anywhere else in the world. Also, since digital and analog tv broadcasts are so sparse and limited in north america, there is zero chance Sony would release a NTSC/ATSC version in USA (or anywhere else in the world, for the same reason).

Also, just for erocker, the incompatibility of the tuner with the old psp design does not come from plug/adaptor difference (look at the pictures dude the usb port is at the same place ...).

We dont tend to copy paste news, the source button exists for people to check the Entire article otherwise there no reason having it there.

PS : I doubt that there wont be either a hack or a newer version that will support the rest of the world eventually.

why are u waiting?
there is an sony accessoire gps already available (about $50 i think).
and manuals to get maps are around out there too.
otherwise its possible to make urself an gps mouse....

IGN news was flawed and they don't state their source. Just look at Akihabanews for a proof. Engadget also state the 1seg problem.

Actually Engadget took the info from IGN...
I just didnt really think that it would just work with 1Seg since i didnt see it anywhere . ( Saw the 1Seg report but didnt state it only works with that )
Problem corrected.

( Also checked Akihabanews but it doesnt state that it only works with 1Seg either...Just says 1Seg Tv Tuner...Just like IGN and Engadget)

If Sony does make one for usa you could use it as a digital tv hump via tv out on the new psp. When they drop all of the analog tv signals in the near future.

I can deffinately see them making a HD adapter in the US. I use a HD USB stick on my computer and it works great!

yepp, thats the gps receiver i mean.
Unfortunately its homebrew software u need.
U can take all the maps u need from google earth... but this procedure takes some time =(
