In an interview with Kikizo, Sony global president Kaz Hirai said that they are "obviously looking" at a variety of things that they could add to Sixaxis now that they've come to an agreement with Immersion. Hirai had this to say about the upcoming controller:

I mean, as you know, that's also an evolving peripheral, if you will, in that we started out with the original PS1 controller with no analogue, and it's come all the way to this point, so obviously, as we go forward, it's not the final model for a PS3 controller, so we'll see what comes down the road.

There's still plenty of conventions left this year so stay tuned for more news regarding SONY's latest controller for the PS3.

NOTHING'S CHANGED.

How is that an "avolving" controller?

Theres 3 versions.. Big whoop. The xbox has gone through more than that and its barely even been around.

This was how the controller should have been o_O

Do you all remember when Sony said they removed rumble because it interfered with the Sixaxis? What a bunch of liars. BTW, the 2 games I've played using sixaxis (Resistance, and Geometry Wars Rip-Off) did not make the games any more fun to play. In fact, they are more of a nuisance.

Now they can claim it as an "engineering marvel!" and "consumer requested innovation!"

What iterations has the xbox gone through? Small more hand friendly size? Wow...that is amazing.

The only difference between ps1 and ps2 I believe was the analog support thrown in for the ps2 (though later peripherals for the ps 1 had it) and the controller design made the directional pad more uniform, not just some arrowed buttons. PS3 just added Sixaxis movement, ala Wii but took away vibration.

Theres a big, small, and wireless.

You could count the minor changes like button addition and stuff too if you wanted.

They are excellent PC controllers. Now theres a wireless one for PC too. :D

For the playstation...

1) Original Controller

2) Dual Analog

3) dual shock

4) dual shock 2; all of the buttons (except for the Select, Start, Analog mode, L3 and R3 buttons) were pressure sensitive

5) sixaxis wireless

----------------------------------

for xbox...

btw, the duke is a flop due to size, therefore MS had to change it.

1) "the duke" (left), 2) controller s (right)

3) controller s wireless

Forgot the wired 360 controller. Its USB!

Well actually all of them are, but the wired 360 controller is native usb port style.

The triggers have long been pressure sensative.

Install the Xbox controller drivers and look at the pressure meter, you can see when its half pressed and fully pressed. ;)

They've been like this for a long while.

Well actually all of them are, but the wired 360 controller is native usb port style.

but its the same thing as the controller s for the xbox, except its white, and looks a tad different. What i listed is difference in internal technology.

for instance for playstation...

1) original

2) dual analogs

3) rumble w/ dual analogs

4) pressure sensitive buttons w/ analog and rumble

5) motion sensing w/ wireless bluetooth

so 5 versions in terms on technology.

and if you consider this for the xbox, the duke and the controller s has no difference other than the duke was a flop...

1) the duke, original

1) controller s, just changes in looks...no technological difference

1) 360 wired, same as controller s, just changes in looks...no technological difference

2) 360 wireless, same as 360 wired, with wireless.

only 2 version in terms of technology.

Wrong.

Theres R1, L1, R2, L2.

And a center button.

And the plug is USB.

Its quite a bit of improvement.

Plus theres PC drivers (from M$.. theres hacked drivers for the old controller tho)

ok then, if you consider adding more buttons a new version in terms of technology, then 3 versions total for the xbox.

Thats not a major technological difference, and actually changes nothing. You have the original, the S which is exactly like the original but smaller. Then you have the 360 Wired and Wireless which adds USB, ands one more button(the xbox button) remember black and white buttons became the bumpers.

So he may not have defined as such, but he still had the steps correct. Also a note, the PS3 Bluetooth remote has been said to work on bluetooth enabled computers, not sure if it's with hacked drivers or something though.

My bad, it added three buttons didn't it. Didn't have any triggers before right?

no, the orginal and the s had the triggers before.

Xbox has actually gone out of their way to change the controller and PS2 has done nothing cept the analog pads.

They initially changed it because the original was very big and people didn't like it. So they gone out of there way to change it because the original was crap. The 360 controller is not much different from the controller s. they look the same. MS saw that the b&w buttons was in a crap ass location (you have to move you hand to press them, not just your thumbs), so they moved it towards the triggers...

So they gone out of there way just to fix there mistakes.

also, playstation been around for 13 years, while xbox is around 6. Sony was the first to get rumble and analog sticks, while xbox just peek over and just started from there.

Usually when someone just signs up to post 1 time in 1 particular thread he either has something to gain or just posts to irritate people.

360 has the best controller. It's the most comfortable. The 6axis is a good idea, but if you've played Ridge Racer, you'd want to stick with analog sticks. If you want realism and precision, Sixaxis and Wiimotion just can't give you what you want. If you've played Ridge Racer using the sixaxis option online, I guarantee you have never won a race.

Want to see the original xbox controller?

Dual triggers pressure sensitive. 4 buttons, ab xy layout, analog stick over dpad layout, memory card slot...see the resemblance?

Xbox controllers have gone through 3 generations of controllers, the big original ones, the revamped smaller ones with moved b/w buttons, and now the 360 controllers. I count the 360's as two dif versions as they were released at the same time just with different internals. A couple things to note in comparison with the psx's is that all playstation controllers are compatible with the newer systems as long as the game supports that controller, the fact that the original psx shipped in 1994 with strait digital controllers, a couple years, yes years, later released analog, and then a year later released rumblepad's. The ps2 had one version of controller and one version only. The sixaxis is a complete joke by my standards, pure gimmick motion sensing, alaxbox triggers, and the center PS button ala360. Other then my gripes the controllers are near perfect except for lack of rumble and therefore weight. PSX, PS1, and PS2 controllers were built like bricks and withstood impact with brick walls and concrete. The sixaxis feels brittle.

Both companies should contract pelican and logitech to design their next controller, the 3rd party controllers are always the best.

Pelican sucks ass. So does mad catz.

Nintendo actually made the amazing wavebird controllers :)

Nintendo guy even demo'd it himself at E3 when it cam out if I recall correctly.

They may have been the OEM, but IDK. It was nintendo branded.
