Gianfranco Lanci, President of PC manufacturer Acer attacked Microsoft over Vista in an interview with the Financial Times Germany. Mr. Lanci stated that the whole industry is having a hard time with Windows Vista due to mistakes made by Microsoft and that never before a new Microsoft OS did so little for PC and notebook sales. And all that while at the same time Windows XP sales are getting stronger again. Still, Microsoft reported quarterly revenue of $13.4 billion, up 13% from last year, citing help from strong Vista sales.

Take out on Dell - they make cooler laptops that people actually want to buy. I'll never buy an Acer - to mee, it just seems like a cheezemo brand. Maybe that's their prob too. Asus FTW

Overpriced? Laptops are cheap as chips these days.

Sometimes even cheaper than the equivalent desktop.

In fact, if you got down to the nitty gritty, the actual TCO of a laptop will likely be significantly cheaper than owning a desktop, due to the super low power consumption.

What may be $400 today is null and void after the first year of use.

You sure Dippy? Let's take my laptop....it was about $1000.

Let's say $190 for a cpu, $100 for a mobo, $100 for 2gb of ram, $110 for Vista, $30 for a dvd burner, $80 for a hdd, $100 for a psu, $150 for a monitor, $20 for speakers, $20 for keyboard/mouse, and $50 for graphics. 190+100+100+110+30+80+100+150+20+20+50=950, then factor in shipping, it'll be about the same, however it's a better comp than the laptop. The whole reason behind a laptop is you get it so you can move...that's the only thing it has, that and the power savings as you said. So yeah in the end the laptop will save more, but the desktop gives you a better comp at the same price.

Yes, but compare an equivilant laptop instead of gimping it.

$1600-$2000 laptop.
$1000 desktop.

Wait huh? What laptop am I gimping? lol. I took the laptop in my specs and just roughly threw some prices together.

And the power reasons are why I don't run my pc 24/7 :D, only.....14/7....coolio. Oh and Dippy, are those at full power usage? A laptop like mine on battery uses ~22-23 watts, on batt I'm usually idling to.

This was my point. ;)

Laptop power consumption was overstated in my estimates, as was desktop, but laptop moreso.

The comparison remains though.

I have my desktop 24/7 and i doubt it burns 300 euros a year....

avg of ~8.27c/kWh, gives you

.085kwh*8760hrs=$746
.350kWh*8760hrs=$3066

Thats roughly $2300 more.

Now which is cheaper?

(I actually just guessed the randomness that is the previous post.)

Why should he be attacking microsoft though? Does he want microsoft to come out and apologize? I'm pretty sure microsoft isn't happy if the OS isn't selling very well, it's as if there is some switch gates forgot to switch that makes money or something.

He's mad because microsoft is trying to force Windows Vista down their throats when its not selling well.

^coming from a mac user

No, this is coming from someone that provides tech support for over 400+ computers, has run Vista, and personally builds computers for people.

I give people the option to pick Vista or XP.

I've not yet had one person go with vista.

And yes, I use a mac. But also notice my system specs right beside my name. Its called a PC.

Maybe I need to tag all of your posts with a "coming from a PC user ^ "?

Just thought it was funny how a mac guy says vista has poor sales, when the topic of this news quotes "strong vista sales".

I'm sure if you search techpowerup news posts, you'll find something like, "windows vista, fastest selling operating system in history".

Just because people don't buy a product from you, because you make up and feed them reasons why they shouldn't, doesn't mean that product has low sales.

Firstly i bet microsoft make up there sales figures for the public to see, to me they probably always have, its so that it looks like vista is the best out there and yet somehow more people are buying XP with there new dells or HP computers.

EDIT: LOL at Wile E, you posted that as i was just about too.

Wow, that got way out of hand real fast. Where's the love? I mean the guy obviously has a PC in his system specs, not just Mac info.

Anyway, but I do believe that Microsoft manipulates their information in a way that makes it seem like Vista is helping their sales, while all the while their revenue is coming from several places, not just Vista. And I agree with Dippyskoodlez, "strong" is relative.

Gianfranco is right, Vista is quite a shitty OS. I've used it now on my home desktop, and because much of my software doesn't work on it (or works unpredictably), I hardly ever use it.

I prefer to use my work notebook with good ol' trusty and proven XP. I'm going to blow Vista away and try Ubuntu for a while. I may go back to it in future, at this stage, it's not worth stuffing around with, it's been a totally dissapointing experience. Lucky the desktop came with it (Vista), as I wouldn't pay for it seperately.
