Bad HD2900xt or Mobo?

My wife just got me an HIS HD2900 for my birthday. However since Iv installed it I have at least 50%+ cpu usage all the time. I upgraded my PSU, reinstalled Vista (3 times) and I still have the same problem. Also when I run the performance index it freeze at "media playback" When I downgraded my GPU to an old X800XL everything ran fine. 0 to 1% cpu usage and a perfect index of 4.9.

Is this a bad card or mobo? Or just plain old piolt error somehow? Please help! I have OCD and this issue is killing me!!!

Yes sir. I downloaded the latest ones from the ATI website. Everything is up to date. Now I have a foolish question. Are they different on the HIS site?

Nope they should be the same since it's a ATI card. Maybe vista is doing stuff in the background because you have a new card?

PS, you're so lucky, you're wife got you a gfx card.

Thats the thing. Nothing is in the task manger. I showed all process with no result. That would be a start at least. Does the card sound bad? My old X800XL and my X1900GT run fine.

Try to remove the drivers using Driver Cleaner , restart and reinstall them.

It happens every time I reinstall the OS. So Im not so sure its the drivers.

Hmmmm.....You did plug the extra power right ? Try to upgrade the windows, perhaps there is an fix from MS..

Yes sir. I have a 600watt with two PCIe plugs going to it and Microsoft found the drivers but it didnt make a difference. This really sucks!

I just noticed that the clock speed of the core and memory is around 500mhz. This is kind of low isnt it?

Do scans and benchies of your hardware to check. Of course, crappy drivers could be a problem too.

Check your windows error logs maybe?

You said it happens everytime you install the OS.
It could be your hard drive maybe?

What are your ram specs, OC etc.

EDIT - It cant be hard drive. Must be software related since you said everything was fine with the old card...

No OC. I have a MSI-7184 board with 3 gigs of ram. HD seems fine with the other GPU's. My wife got this thing from Newegg. I hope they will exchange it.

I had a hard drive with a faulty cable using the majority of one core once.
I asked for specs because I thought he might be overclocked unstably, but considering it works with the other card I dont think so.

There might be nothing wrong with your x2900xt...just put it in another computer and see.

Nope. I only get a 1 to 4% on the other cards. My specs are listed under my name.

Iv been two nervous to run it in a game. When I even move a window the whole computer turns into a slug with a the CPU at 100% usage. When I dont move or open anything it stays at 50%.
