BF 2142, should I buy?

Well..

I was looking on EA Link (similar to Steam, except EA owns it), and I was thinking about buying BF 2142. I don't like buying CDs so all the games I buy are now only through Steam. However, my question is: Does EA Link work similar to Steam as far as keeping your downloads on any computer ect... My next question is, is the game funner than its predecessor BF 2?

I still play BF2 quite a bit, but the 2142 servers are usually sorta slow. You can use a tool like gamemonitor (or something to that effect) and search for 2142 servers and see for yourself. Add the fact that you'll feel like you're getting waxed because everyone else has unlocks...and I'd say save your money. It does run faster than bf2, load times are decreased, etc., so they coded it a little tighter.

EA link isn't bad--I used it to d/l the expansion packs to BF2, and if you look in the right place you can burn the .exe's to dvd for a backup. but yeah; you remember your login/pwrd, and EA remembers the programs you bought.

I love BF2142, my buddy has BF2 also, but he talked me into getting 2142 instead and I'm happy I did. It's very fun, and kind of interesting to see their take on militaristic battles of the future with walkers, hover tanks, weapons, titans, etc. Graphics are decent, not really improved from BF2. Load times are nicer, I don't generally have issues with servers. There is the occassional server that gives everyone the "There is a Problem with your Connection" etc. My biggest gripe is cheaters. I started about 3 weeks ago and have been hooked, me and a few buddies in town started a clan and have been playing a couple days a week.

It's also my first foray into VOip, which I do see a point in now that I've used it. We use ventrillo for our group, I haven't used BF2142's VOip feature. But I like the different abilities, weapons, and strategy.

I am working on getting unlocks for the other positions, I currently use Assault as my primary. It's a great game, and so is BF2, it kind of depends on what kind of game you want to play in really.

This is one of the top games im playing at the minute, Definetly get it! yea the EA steam like program is great, i Downloaded Bf2142 Northern strike off it..but i bought the original game Retail DVD, you wont be dissapointed if you get this game..im sure you realise how addictive it is if youve played the demo. I play the game at Max settings at max resolution for my Monitor, I have an amd 64 x2 6000+ and an Nvidia 7950GT, always get about 60frames in 64 player maps i get an average of about 50 fps.. which still rocks!

The weird thing about the demo was... I kicked me out everytime because it said my punkbuster was saying I was cheating?? The only time I've seen that message is on 64-bit Vista.

You need to update the punkbuster and have a PnkBstrA.exe runing in your system. If you don't have it you can't play. Vista is the cause for that update and why it has to be a system process (even in XP).. But if it keep couple cheats out, it's all good.

And definitely buy it, I've played over 300h and still great! Unlock systm is awesome and titan mode brings a whole new experience. Runs great and looks better than most games out there.

I went back to XP to get VOip to work with my P5B Deluxe since Vista drivers completely sucked. I play the game maxed out, force ATI CCC to 6x AA, x16 AF, 1440x900 (+Fullscreen sryx 1440 sryz900...something similar to that). The game doesn't support widescreen, but using my 1440 res I do not have stretched text, graphics or anything, and it runs great! I definately recommend this game, I love it...in fact, I'm gonna have to get on and play here shortly!

Servers aren't slow, they are really fast (well at least in europe). I only play on under 80ms servers and plenty of them to go around.

What comes to unlocks, it doesn't matter if you don't have anything, just kill someone, take his kit and you have their unlock untill you die. If you want superfast unlock but northern strike booster back too. There every medal/badge/ribbon is a unlock and they work in the normal game too. Not that many NS servers going on anymore though, but it's cheap. Orginal game has at least 200h of gameplay in it, so just that will do fine also.

Install Punkbuster using PBSetup

Let me know how Northern Strike is, I haven't purchased it yet, me and my buddies in the clan (-BeerMe-) have been considering it though. But like someone said earlier, there aren't many that seem to use it. I want to try it's new game mode though! And I want the extra unlocks! I think you'll enjoy it Ravenas, I enjoy it most when on a squad/team using voip and actually coordinating tactics, then it gets fun, you die less, your skill/weapon set is needed, etc. It makes time just fly by when it gets like that. I love the Titan maps atm, they can be a bitch sometimes when new, same with the vehicles, but I'm getting better with them.

I haven't heard of anyone being lucky pirating an actual online version of 2142, I did try with BF2, but gave up and there's no point to the offline side of the game.

Have you tried BF2/2142 online? It's a blast especially with a few friends and a bunch of beer. This game was worth the purchase, whereas some I did get for "free" I got rid of and glad I didn't waste my money. Your loss russianboy, it's great to get some agression out by killing others online. But when you bust your ass at work 50-60+hours a week and deal with a bunch of bull-shit, it's really worth it, at least for me!

BF 2142 is awesome! Much better than its predecessor BF 2... I love how you gain ranks and get better weapons. I am owning people with the shotgun!!! =D

Nice! I've never really used the shotgun?! I have my assult guy all unlocked and usually own with the assult gun. I find sniping easier in BF2 for some reason. Are you using the assult shotgun addon or the support shotgun?

Seems like you're advansing fast =) Shotguns kill with one shot, but they are just for close combat. If it's an open level you're out of luck. The support shotgun is obviously even better, but you need to be good at fast aiming, or you die while trying to get next shot out.

I could kill you once on twice, but seeing as we are so far apart, ping would be a killer alone

Once you get bored with assault-medic try recon/engineer/support they are all good =) Those unlocks will take time though, for one dude it fast, but for all 4 to get everything it's hard work. Well that's part of the fun. Hope you enjoy it!
