According to IGN, the first physical in-person E3 2023 show in four years will not be accompanied by the biggest names in the gaming industry—Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo. Historically, gaming shows like E3 have been the primary source of news and hype machines that allowed gaming publishers to showcase their latest work and partnerships with other companies/brands alike. However, as IGN's sources note, this year's E3 will lack the presence of the biggest names in the industry, like Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo. With the first physical E3 event in four years, it is only logical that companies look forward to participating and showing their upcoming work to generate interest. But, the leading console makers will not do so.

It means that the latest E3 show will be a bit different and that the rest of the gaming industry has to adapt. IGN has contacted Sony, Xbox, Nintendo, and Entertainment Software Association (ESA) representatives, with no response at the time of writing. ReedPop, E3's parent company, has issued a statement that notes that there have been some changes to E3's format, which we are yet to see in June once the Los Angeles event starts. You can read the statement for IGN below.

ReedPop for IGN said:
E3 is such a significant event for the game industry and being entrusted with an important cultural touchstone is not a responsibility ReedPop takes lightly. Since ReedPop took on the contract to run E3 six months ago, we've worked diligently with ESA members based on their feedback to create a new type of E3 that supports their goals and needs.

This process has taken time due to the tremendous amount of stakeholders offering input, though we appreciate that we could have been more transparent to questions for which we were still finalizing the answers. We continue to work tirelessly to create a show that brings together the global gaming industry. We believe we've created a new format for the event that serves the needs of both the industry and its fans, and are committed to building and growing it in the coming years.

As we spent much of 2022 refining how E3 2023 would take shape, reflecting on the feedback we solicited, we did not send a single contract to an exhibitor until the start of this month. We have received a tremendous amount of interest and verbal commitments from many of the biggest companies in the industry, and when we are ready to announce the exhibitors we are confident it will be a lineup that will make the trip to Los Angeles well worth it for the industry and consumers alike.

All three of them skipped E3 back in 2019, why would they attend this year?

As much as I'd like to remember the E3's of the 90's and early 2000's there's no real reason for E3 to exist anymore.

E3 was cool late 90's and early 2000's, i remember going to town getting all them magazines, drooling over the screenshots and trying demo's from the supplied CD's. Game tech changed so fast during that era when hardware acceleration took off. To me that was and still is the golden era for games to play.

Those companies are making a moronic choice. Seriously people? Where are your brains, in your bum?

My personal favorite E3 was 2013 when Sony and Microsoft were one-upping and absolutely tearing the sh*t out of each other promoting their upcoming consoles.

I still have nostalgia for Sony's famous press conference all these years later:

It'll be a shame not to see this kind of stuff anymore at the event.

Yea thats also how I like to remember E3, it was the most interesting thing to me back then when I was a school kid and still bought PC magazines.:) 'with my hardly saved up little money'
But in the last few years I barely followed it and only checked the list of announcements/trailers at a later point.

Why did they made this decision back in 2019? Is it a preference towards a different event, their own events (where!?), some sort of conflict with the organization, etc?

Maybe not, but they have a lot to gain from attending. Thus my statement about their collective heads being in their butts.
Bullshit trade shows stopped mattering a long time ago outside of no name fuckwads that real companies don't want to be seen around. If you count, if you matter, if your name is worth more than rat piss, you hold your own event. Trade shows suck.

Exactly. E3 was cool when Sony, Xbox and Nintendo did not take part and it was all about the PC.
These days there's no shortages of sources hyping every mediocre game just because someone decided to pour millions in drawing pretty textures (and not even that, sometimes).

In this digital age marketing can be done a lot cheaper than attending E3, it used to be a good place to gather for journalists to gather some info and then spread it further.
These days the companies can do the PR mostly on their own.

Given the pathetic games we have so far, they won't be missed.

That is your opinion, and not a very lucid one.
Says you, an authority on trade shows?

Yeah, they haven't needed to attend. They get by just fine doing their own announcements on their own time.

Common sense.
PC doesn't count it's been a joke for a while, next great PC thing will be the full move to the cloud sorry it's over. MS, Sony, Nintendo all hold their own events and all do just fine they don't need E3. E3 needs them. Just as big level developers don't need it. Capcom does not need E3 to drop a new Street Fighter. They can just drop it and people will go wild over it. And if they are going to drop it in public they can walk on stage at any of the thousands of events and do it there with Sony hand in hand and be greated with orgasms of happy and awesome.

Nobody who's anybody cares or gives a flying fuck about E3, haven't for a while.

Doesn't really sound like a good comeback already? The gaming industry adapted without them over the last 5 years(2018 was the last year they were there). The can advertise directly through their social media accounts and get more traction and attention. Especially Youtube, Twitter, and Twitch.

You are aware Steam is halfway to the "cloud" and the skyrocketing cost of parts means people who can't shell out 3k+ for a GPU are going to be cloud gamers on the PC within a decade right? That's the state of PC gaming and they aren't going to E3. Nintendo has their own event. So do Sony and Microsoft. They all have media feeds, own events, and even updates and news on their consoles.

They don't need it. It's a shit show.

Why would they need to? A lot of gamers are still at 1080p.
