ASUS ROG Ally Powered by AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Priced at $700

ASUS's sensational handheld game console, the ROG Ally, will be priced at $699.99 for the model powered by the top AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, according to a leak by SnoopyTech. This top model will feature a 7-inch Full HD screen with 120 Hz refresh-rate, and Dolby Atmos-capable audio. Under the hood, the Ryzen Z1 is based on the 4 nm "Phoenix" silicon, featuring an 8-core/16-thread "Zen 4" CPU, and its full Navi3 iGPU based on the RDNA3 graphics architecture, with 12 CU (768 stream processors). This chip is wired to 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory, and a 512 GB NVMe SSD.

ASUS has a cheaper model of the ROG Ally designed for cloud gaming and casual gaming, powered by the Ryzen Z1 (non-Extreme). The non-Extreme Z1 rocks a 6-core/12-thread "Zen 4" CPU, but a heavily cut down iGPU with just 4 CU (256 stream processors), which are plenty for the intended use-cases. ASUS could price this much lower than the top model, with speculations pointing to $499.

Yeah, exactly...compared to what? There's no shortage of people who complain about price based solely on the fact that they just don't like the price or can't afford it (this handheld isn't something I can just jump up buy based on price, but that doesn't mean the price is inherently bad), completely ignoring other objective and subjective considerations that dictate said price. One of the best examples was the $50 price bump on Zen3.....yeah, nobody likes a price bump, but considering that they were literally the best all around CPUs at the time and had a huge selection of chipsets and motherboards across a large price range, the price is going to reflect that (I'm sure some of the criticism came from the fact that so many people STILL consider AMD to be a "budget" brand and have the expectation that their products should ALWAYS cost less regardless of their performance with respect to competing products)

Actually quite well priced, still.
I really hope this device fails on a personal level.
For me the Steam Deck gave a good opening for Linux gaming, other handhelds using Windows Counteracts that.
I hope Valve will open Steam OS well for OEM's and will continue to offer the better user experience, as really that is exactly what Linux gaming needs.
Hopefully we reach the point that anti-cheats will no longer be implemented in a way that blocks Linux.

In this price/power range I bet it's easily the most powerful SoC/hardware out there possibly even better than M1 based air.

For reference latest SD flagships easily go over 1K including from the vast majority of Chinese brands.

Also the prices should come down over time, especially if Asus isn't selling them at or just below cost like Sony/MS does.

And i was expecting 1200. Anyone who complains about the price needs a reality check. Yes Steam Deck is cheaper but not by much and has weaker hardware.
Aya Neo is way more expensive with prices starting at 800 going all the way to 2000 (also weaker hardware).

This does make aya look very poor though. I can understand ASUS having industry connections, but the price difference is kinda nuts.
We could argue that Valve is selling it at a loss because they're getting you in the steam ecosystem (which I think is not true tbh) but ASUS has no such reasons.
It's still a leak though, so we will see what it will be.

Insane price (in a good way) if it really is for top of the line model. Suddenly I'm interested! I imagine Asus want the buyer to spend extra on accessories like rog-branded stands, headphones and so on, which they already have.

Well, not exactly cheap but I expected at least a 999$ price tag, so colour me surprised. After seeing the success of the Switch, the Steam Deck, and now this, I cant help but think this is what Microsoft or Sony should have released, a portable Xbox or a new Sony PSP/Vita. The Steam Deck is for all intents and purposes a cut down Xbox Series/PS5.
On another note, I hope we see more of this AMD Z1 APU, and hopefully see it in AM5 socket.

Depending on the quality of the construction, performance, and battery life, that price seems decent. It looks very Xbox-ish in the controls, which isn't a bad thing. What would be even cooler is if they partnered with Valve and made a SteamOS version as well that's cheaper, but I'm sure MS had a hand in this thing's development. I wonder how long before the industrious open source community does it anyway.
