Synology is proud to announce the launch of its Plus Series SATA HDDs, specifically designed to meet the reliability, endurance, and performance requirements of 24/7 storage in Synology entry-level and mainstream systems. These hard drives have been rigorously tested and validated with Synology systems to ensure consistent performance in multi-user environments. The Plus Series joins the existing Enterprise Series lineup of hard drives, bringing the convenience of Synology hard disk drives to even more users.

"Designed with Synology systems in mind, these drives are perfect for users who need dependable storage with the added convenience of DSM firmware updates and a single window of support for all system issues," said Peggy Weng, Product Manager at Synology. Synology Plus Series HDDs offer a perfect balance of reliability and convenience for home and small office users, providing a dependable solution to meet their storage needs, whether for file sharing, data backup, or surveillance recording.

Key features of Synology Plus Series HDDs include:
  • Reliable always-on operation: With 1 million hours mean time between failures (MTBF)2 and 180 TB/year workload rating, these CMR drives provide up to three times the endurance rating of conventional desktop hard drives
  • Tested for maximum reliability: Over 300,000 hours of stringent compatibility and stress testing ensure smooth operation even under multi-user workloads
  • Seamless firmware updates: Users can update drives directly from Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM), eliminating the need to remove drives and perform manual updates
  • One-stop support: Customers can receive technical support and process returns by contacting Synology directly through their Synology Account
  • Four different capacities: The Plus Series HDDs come in 4 TB, 6 TB, 8 TB, and 12 TB models, catering to various storage needs and budgets
Availability
The Synology Plus Series SATA HDDs are available for purchase immediately through Synology's global network of resellers and partners.

MTBF and warranty is worse than current market brands. Unless this is priced well, it doesn't bring new or interesting to the market.

Now Synology has their own HDD, I wonder how long it'll be before they only certify their drives for certain things.

Is that 180 write and read combined, or 180 for each?
Combined. It's to do with arm actuator wear and read or write wears them equally.

How are they worse when WD Red and Red Plus are 3 years as are Seagate Ironwolf. Only pro versions get 5 years and better write endurance. I'm guessing the Synology HDD are just rebrands of WD Red Plus.

Is there really a need for this type of re-badging? This seems to the a step towards a more closed system?

I bet that 8tb (and maybe 6tb) is actually 7200rpm just internally throttled. Vendors need to stop doing that as some of us actually prefer 5400rpm for its noise and power consumption.

Money is the need, Synology gets to make a couple extra bucks rebadging drives and whatever partner they decided to team up with to source the drives (WD, Seagate, Toshiba, not that many manufacturers to pick from) also gets a nice guaranteed boost in sales. They been locking the enterprise systems to first party drives, matter of time till consumer systems gets the exclusive treatment too.

The customer gets screwed but as long as Synology gets to make an extra buck who cares right?

So who makes these, WD, Segate, maybe Toshiba?
Based on their mockup design that would be Seagate.
