NVIDIA has accidently listed something on one of its web pages which would seem to support the story posted two days ago regarding the possibility of a new 8800 GTS based on the same G92 graphics processor as the 8800 GT. Originally shown on this page (although it's now been removed), NVIDIA let slip that it may be planning a 512MB 8800 GTS, which would seem to agree with the idea of a 256-bit version of the card. Admittedly it's not concrete evidence, but it definitely sounds suspiciously like a G92 8800 GTS could well be on the cards. The extract in question is shown at the bottom of the screenshot, and reads as follows:
5. HD DVD / Blu-ray Video Playback on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB and 8800 GT is classified as Excellent. HD DVD / Blu-ray Video Playback on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra, GeForce 8800 GTX and GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB/640MB are classified as Good.
So it might be worth waiting before buying an 8800 GT if these cards are just around the corner.

Why is it that people are concerned with HD /Blue ray playback with their GPUs? I mean, shouldn't there really be components /cards that are dedicated to such a thing if you REALLY REALLY are that concerned on the matter?

Why does a gamer, give any concern to whether a new card has better blue ray than it's predecessor?

Always been curious about this.

I guess the 320-bit interface just wasn't working too well..

The HD / BR playback is just marketing. Having dedicated components when your video card is much better / efficient at rendering video is also pretty silly. Gamers aren't truly concerned about this, but it's a nice feature especially for when HD players become more affordable and practical.

Aye a nice feature, and I know noone really ponders over the card's blue ray quality, but I wonder what else the resources could be spent on.

I'm excited about the HD playback for my HTPC. This means I can also play demanding games with some serious frame rates on my 1080p big screen.

I am currently running a 8600GTS to get HD Pure Video 2.0 but it's game limit is probably ET Quakewars. A new 8800GTS should play Crysis and beyond.

You will be fine on Quakewars. My dad plays the Quakewars demo on an old socket A 2200+,1GB DDR400, and my old XFX 6800XT.

In addition to the 512MB model there will be a G92GTS with 1GB onboard GDDR...

no point in waiting. This will be the same card as GT (512mb/256-bit), except for a few more SPs... totally not worth it. At least they should have made it 320-bit/640mb

Er, rather the G80 revised version is supposed to be 640/320 bit, but with the extra fourteen SPs enabled.

The G92 GTS, if it ever comes, will be the 256bit.

Alledgedly the 8800GTS 512mb if/when it comes SHOULD be worth it, it is going to have a performance hike over the GT or there would be no point in releasing it, there are more ways than just adding SP's to improve performance, higher stock shader clocks for example, higher stock GPU and GDDR voltages allowing much higher overclocks is another.

Most people will be happy with the 512MB, anyone on resolutions of 16xx x 10xx and below should find it more than enuff, for those that dont there is rumoured to be the 1GB GDDR4 version.

I also cannot understand why people are getting hung up over 256Bit as opposed to the outgoing 320bit, if the GT's performance is anything to go by (the card appears faster than most of ATi's 512bit???) it dont make a bit of difference and would suggest to me that not all the bandwidth is being used in any case.

Aye a nice feature, and I know noone really ponders over the card's blue ray quality, but I wonder what else the resources could be spent on.

could have been spent on the 'cosmetics' of the card throwing in a more efficient & silent dual slot cooler like EVGA's AS KO series cards that would have been nice otherwise im going to have to go aftermarket cooling & for what im after aint cheap & i have to buy 2 cuz im going to be running in SLI

also as most reviews claim that the stock cooler is silent but sorry '51db' is not 'silent' compared to Arctic silencers X2 @42-44Db with the fan maxed out. now that is silent almost whisper quiet hardly audiable when the pc is on
