After purchasing IBM's PC division three years ago Lenovo has continued to use the IBM brand until now. Although the agreement gave Lenovo rights to the IBM name until 2010 the company has now announced that, starting from next year it would drop the brand.

Another reason the chinese just arent that smart when it comes to business. Everyone knows the IBM brand. Hardly anyone knows the Lenovo brand. If I were them, Id keep using it until 2010 and try to go beyond that.

Lenovo is doing the right think, right now i would say they are more popular than ibm branded computers plus the ibm name does have quite a chequered history.

I have an old ibm and i am still using it today, just for little notes and stuff, IBM has the strongest capabilities, and if you are wondering what ibm it is its the one that came out with windows 3.11 :)

My father's work laptops have both been IMB/Lenovo branded. The IBM one was a rubbish piece of kit that constantly crashed and the HDD often failed from new. The Lenovo model on the other hand was perfect. I have no idea as to why there was such a large difference between the brands since they are both owned by Lenovo. The laptops were both the same age and apparently the same price. But I know which one he would choose.

I think it's rather dumb of them to drop the IBM nameplate . . .

I mean - if nothing other than it's one of the oldest companies in the US, and they've always been known for building solid, reliable and capable equipment

Ibm also has links to Nazi Germany and Apartheid south Africa, my most recent memory of IBM products is the crappy deskstar hard drives of which the 6 that i have owned 5 died and no.6 is faulty. Lenovo is a legitimate marketable new brand name, IBM on the other hand is out of date and no doubt one of the reasons why Lenovo has dropped the IBM name earlier than expected.
