Not sure what happened. But over time, I've noticed artifacts in the display and when I refresh the desktop, they disappear.

I'm not using ATI Tool to overclock, I'm using it for monitoring the temps.

I uninstalled ATI Tool and the drivers and reinstalled them without ATI Tool and still end up with the same thing.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

just do a visual inspection first of all and make sure there is not a really dirty cooler.

2 thoughts come to mind.....Im assuming you are on a stock cooler correct? If so I would ,if you are handy enough, completely dissasemble and clean the cooler.

Also have you resently taken the card out of the machine b4 the arti's started.....reason is it may have loosened the TIM and this lets the core heat up.

If you do go the route of removing and cleaning the cooler, do replace the TIM (thermal interface material) with AS5 or MX2 or the like

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, when I first got the card, I removed the garbage thermal tape that ATI uses and replaced it with Artic Silver. That was a little over a year ago and it was fine up until last week.

I do not think it is a heat issue since the artifacts go away when I refresh the desktop. Would you think it's possible that it could be a foul in the refresh rate?

Or maybe even an onboard memory issue?

Thanks!

Do me a quick favor and go to the user CP in the header bar and fill out the system specs part. Dont forget to check the "show" option of those settings. Try to fill it out as completely as you can.

this will help me a bit in trying to help you out.

to be honest I never ran into an artifact issue on my X850XT flashed to Platinum, unless I just had it Oc'd way to far.the only way I could get it to atri. was with heat, and that was at like 65*C

Could very likely just be a failing VGA but lets assume it isnt because that sux.

And also you are saying its artifacting on the desktop then, as you posted that a refresh cures it?

if the problem just started after a year it's most likely heat related. i had a card that did the exact same thing, so i got after-market cooling and the problem was solved.

I disassembled the fan and heat sink and cleaned the mating surfaces and re-applied the Arctic Silver 5.

Reassembled and it still does the same thing, hehe, I just think by chance the card may have took a dookie on me.

I just keep wondering, what makes artifact ?
is it the overclocking of core or mem ?
or to high gpu voltage they put ?
or...
what make it artifact ?

Usually happens due to the speed of the core clock and memory clock not being in sync to the speed of the bus path. There is an equation that exists and also, adjusting the voltage increases the ratio to speed. This causes the GPU to heat up and then causes the refresh rate to slow down which then the refresh rate says..."Cut it out butthole, I can't keep up!"
