Mac OS X Firewall Blocks Skype, Online Games

It seems as though the mass adoption of Mac OS X Leopard is bringing Apple more than publicity and sales. The German security experts at Heise Security and security blogger Rich Mogull tested OS X Leopard out for themselves, and found some serious problems. The OS X Leopard firewall works by signing applications that aren't already signed by Apple, so that they are given the go-ahead by the firewall. Unfortunately, when a program changes, that go-ahead disappears. Skype is one of those programs that changes itself, and so it comes as no surprise that Skype users are reporting trouble getting Skype to work on their Mac OS X Leopard computers. World of Warcraft also has this problem, though it's not entirely understood why. World of Warcraft forum members report that reinstalling the game clears the bug right up.

So disable the firewall...
I disable the XP and the Vista firewall as a precaution as it supposedly interferes with other firewalls that may be running. Its really not a big deal.

I'm almost absolutely sure that there was a more simple solution for these people than to reinstall World of Warcraft -- jeebus, that program takes like five hours to reinstall, with all the patches and whatnot. Of course, these are Apple users -- they probably paid some tech support guy at the Apple store $70/hour to reinstall it for them.

I'm an Apple user and I can't afford to pay those people to fix my stuff (even though I've never had a problem with Mac).

Well, so am I, and I can't either. But the vast majority of Apple users I've met can (spend some time around a college, trust me, you'll see).

Yep. I've never used any OS's built-in firewall. They're usually crap, imo, regardless of the OS.
