Confused! 8600GT or 3850

But even so it still depends on the person. Some people WANT overkill, others, like you, prefer to skimp for a while so they can get a much better PC further down the line.

the 3850 is barley overkill...for WoW, yeah it's overkill...but for say, crysis it's the bare minimum for half decent gameplay...

um my game play is amazing...granted my card is heavily modded i play everything at 1600x1200 and oblivion gets smooth frames..........and crysis at medium settings does just fine.

Smooth frames meaning roughly how many? Any less than 50/ 60 is too little as far as I'm concerned; CoD4 is around 40 for me at this res' which I consider too few but I know of no AM2 mATX overlocking crossfire boards unless you can point me in the right direction, young Jedi! Anyway, your card is "heavily modified", does the thread creator want to invest more time performing similar mod's to his hardware or just get the best from what he has/ will be getting in the post?

The 8600 does fine at my native 1680x1050.

I get what you guys are saying though, until very recently I had overkill for every part in my computer. I was literally sitting around one day and realized it was a complete waste because I don't play any new games at all. So like I said, I sold it and was intent on building a computer that would hold me over until a bunch of newer games I like come out, and as of now nothing interest me until the release of Fallout 3 and SC2, I'm more excited about Fallout 3 personally, I know I'm in the minority there. SC2 should be great as well.

well in oblivion i get like 40 forest its like 15ish but its smooth in crysis ill get like 25-30 steady wioth no jitters. im not saying the 8600GT is the best card out their and i quite agree with you the 3850 would destroy it....however other than those 2 games i top 60+FPS and all im saying is you cant really count anycard out granted he might want to preforme such mods but mods are cheap and improve preformance a great deal in most situations...i dont have the best card in the world but i bet i have one of the best 8600GT's......i mean i get good stable frams or amazing frams i cant complain and im more proud of my 8600GT than if i were to simply go out and buy a 8800GT or 3870HD

i know but my card can keep up in any game you guys play not for framvs fram or qualityvsquality but i could lan you and still not glitch up or stutter do to low frams and youd still get besteds by solaris at ut04

its simply that though i personally would and do like to get the most top end components i cant wait for my 8800GT in the end it really doesnt matter as if you tweak and get to know your system enough and get it to run right like me you can play any new game out without deadly slow frams they arent the best but they arent bad at all for your heardware. and you get the pride of knowing you took slow old components and made them work to their maximum and can still play with the big boys who blow thousands of $$$$$$ and you can still frag and win no matter how many xxxfffgtthhhhdxdxdx they have in their caqrd name.

however orbit if you know the 3850 is better than you kinda already know the answer to your own question however if your looking for support because you bealive the 8600 is good enough for you than well it is and here i am.

ohhh my frienfd its all about "grapes are sour" we all know that 8600gt is incapable at 1600 up resolutions with even medium details in newer games simplay due to its 128 bit memory bandwidth so its useless to claim better frame rates i had 8600gts in sli and even then they sucks simply due to low bandwidth cards are good for money but you can play smoothly price is useless simple ...why not get a geforce 8400 and play on 1024x768 as 8600gt can play on 1600x1200 hahah

You know, you did kinda ask for this...

Your getting ripped on because you chose to keep an absolutely inferior video card over a much more superior model (which didn't cost all that much more). At the pricepoint of a new HD3850, when you consider all the bells and whistles it comes with and the overall performance level, it's honestly quite a bargin. While I can understand your reasons and your train of thought, in the long run, regardless of the money saved, you would be so much better off with the HD3850...

I was in your shoes once, trying to decide between an 8600GT or an HD2600XT (because of budget) and ultimately went with the HD2600XT because it offered so much more at nearly the same price as the 8600GT (true native HDMI support w/ audio for one thing). Anyhow, like I said earlier, to each his own. You don't deserve to get ripped on because of your opinion but you all but pretty much asked for it in hindsight.

P.S - Love your sound card!

I think everyone just has a difference in is X dollars worth Y in performance. In this case the price difference is about $100, and the performance is acceptable for my needs. I honestly expect people to choose the 3850 because their situation is different. I'm fairly sure they all won't be building a new system soon, and the games they play are different than the older ones that I do. The only annoying part to me was people saying "3850 owns 8600GT" that's extremely obvious, and ignoring the whole situational aspect of my question. Anyway, no need to debate over it anymore, I've chosen the 8600 and will ask God for forgiveness this sunday...just incase he's an ATI fanboy.
