While the rumor that CompUSA is closing soon has been going around the internet for around a week now, nobody had actually confirmed anything. CompUSA head honchos officially confirmed what has been suspected: CompUSA was acquired by an investment firm, which goes by the name of the Gordon Brothers Group.
Under the terms of the deal, ownership of CompUSA will be transferred from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim to the Gordon Brothers Group. "An orderly and expedited wind-down and asset sale process is the best option for CompUSA and its creditors at this juncture," said Bill Weinstein of the Gordon Brothers Group.
Assuming you have a CompUSA near you, expect some very nice going out of business sales to arrive shortly.

Namely right after Christmas (i.e. December 26th) I already asked the employees working there this a few days ago and they confirmed what I just stated, but thats at least for their store here in Huntsville I can't confirm this for every other CompUSA store in the U.S.

I had a COMPUSA store by my house. I know why they closed they had way to many employees standing around and talking about there weekend rather then helping customers. Just very very bad customer service in my eyes. They had ok products but way over priced compared to the online sellers price. When you add all of it up you get poor sales. If any one is looking for a good computer store in LA/Orange County area check out MICROCENTER. Nice top of the line stuff including water cooling supplies. There prices seem ok compared to online places. And there customer service is A+ ;)

When they were closing down their store around my area few months back they had this "Clearance Close Out Sale". I went in just to see what it was all about but I already knew what to expect. (Prior to that the last time I visited CompUSA was probably few years back, at least 4 or 5) Anyways, the prices were not only the same old inflated prices CompUSA always offers, but in many cases prices were way above their own standard inflated prices. Way above! I chuckled to myself browsed a bit and got the heck out of there. The "Clearance Close Out Sale" went on for almost a month. The longest "Clearance Close Out Sale" I ever heard of. I'm guessing they had some serious trouble selling those old GeForce FX5200 cards for $249.99. :D

Totally agree. Comp USA sucked that's why they are gone. When the store was closing near my house, the employees raided everything. I'm glad I treated their representation like crap when I dealt with them. Good riddance!

sorry to say it, but for this region, CompUSA was the last one standing against Best Buy and Circuit City, and with only two stores in the whole 7 cities, they held out for a good long while here.

Sadly, it's because of Best Buy and Circuit City that all the independent PC shops folded, and new ones barely manage out a month.

I at least knew that CompUSA had a good selection of hardware, and a decent range of brands - as compared to BB and CC which only tend to carry the lower and mid-range products, and charge out the ass for them, too. Around here, if you saw a product at either BB or CC, chances were that CompUSA had the same item for near about 10%-15% less than what the other two were asking, at the very least.

For example, the 2GB set of PNY XLR8 DDR2 I bought from them. $145 on the shelf. BB carried the same 2GB set - but wanted $389. CC wanted $315.

CompUSA had in-stock the VisionTek HD2900 XT 512MB for $399; CC has the same exact VGA adapter on the shelf for $439.

I still refuse to purchase and PC hardware or software from BB or CC - my boycott will continue, let those who don't know any better get ripped off, it sure as hell is keeping the two giants opened. I guess I'll just have to take my buisness to the online stores now. :ohwell:

Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
I bought my camera from BB and after buying many things from them in the past they held the order, as it was expensive and I ordered it NDA, but later to learn that they were not in stock as was stated on the site, and I still got charged the NDA freight.

No more. I have had enough of a few stores. Tigerdirect lost my business when some prices were quoted and then were changed.

Zipzoomfly
Newegg

These are the only places I buy anymore.

tigerdirect lost my business as soon as I found out newegg and zipzoomfly existed... tigerdirect is known for selling refubished/used hardware as new, saw that at the better business bureau. i got a motherboard one time and it had thermal greased smeared near the cpu socket, i think it was used, but I couldnt say for certain. anyway tigers prices are always higher than zipzoom and newegg.

my two cents

While the rumor that CompUSA is closing soon has been going around the internet for around a week now...

It was never a rumour. It was simply that there was no confirmed date for the stores to close.

Im hoping the Kosmos Case they got there will go for like 100 bucks or less. I cant wait. In YEsterdays Edition of the Huntsville Times (main section A1 page) they had an ad in the third or fourth page, right hand side on the bottom for a clearance sale. Everything on sale in the whole store. Looks like tomorrow I may be going and checking that stuff out. At least see what they got.
