Please help... installing a new card

My instruction booklet says I should go into add/remove programs and uninstall my existing card. Is this a necessary step. The reason I ask is because I don't know what to remove. I see two possibilities:

ATI Software
Nvidia Drivers

The computer is an Acer Aspire T180.

Thank you.

I always uninstall old drivers and clocking tools. run driver cleaner , then install new drivers, even if card is the same brand as previous card!

Thank you for your reply, but being a newbie, I did not understand what would be my next step. Could you please walk me through it. Also, do you agree that I should uninstall the two items mentioned?

Can you post your specs for your machine,if you know them?

EDIT-just looked

It is nvida onboard graphics, you need to remove the nvidia drivers(for the onboard graphics) then go into your bios(not sure which button it will be on that) but normally it is del or F1,which you press wen it boots up.

Then you need to go into integrated devices(it may be something differant in your machine) and disable the onboard graphics.

Then put your new card in,and reboot.

By the looks of it,the machine has a 16x pci-e slot,so i presume thats what the new card is.

IDK he should be ok even if he doesnt disable the onboard as my Lady's HP took my old X850 with no trip into Bios to select input, just be sure to tell him to move his VGA/DVI cable to the card!
