Xeon alternative to Q6600 GO CHEAP!!

Reminiscent of the old Opteron 939 days, there is a Xeon X3210 GO chip that is a cheaper, but possibly better version of the Q6600 GO. Get it here for $240 retail:

Good chips, but bear in mind the prefetchers are tuned for server tasks as opposed to gaming.
There's a write up on them in this months custompc (u.k. mag), and the 3220 (same speed as a q6600) was 3% slower in their media benchmarks, 25%slower in games, and 3% faster at folding

Are u sure about that man?:shadedshu I own a Xeon X3220 OC to 3.0Ghz and the Q6600 at 3.0Ghz in my old rig setup.... Xeon is faster then Q6600 in games for me....

thats what their article says, it still dosent seem right to me though, the 3% better/worse performance in different scenario's seems legitimate, but the 25% in games?, methinks they had a board with a bad bios, or some kind of driver issue

crysis demo 1280x1024, 2xAA:
q6600= 20min, 33avg (fps)
x3220= 16min, 33avg

supreme commander 1280x1024, 2xAA:
q6600= 10min, 41avg
x3220= 8min, 40avg

does it have a 8 or 9 multiplier or is it unlocked anyone?

It is supposed to have a 8x multiplier, but I did read that some people had an unlocked multiplier??!! All I know is that just like the 939 Opterons, the Xeons are usually "hand picked" chips. Even at an 8X multiplier, it's not like it makes much of a difference, since most good boards can handle close if not above a 500 fsb. I know my DS3 can handle at least 490 stable. I think it will be a fun chip to mess around with, especially with the wait on penryn.

Yes but most quads won't go over 450 fsb stable or not much more.

I had my Quad at 462 fsb, perfectly stable. Plenty good for me, if that's all I can get. The only time I ran over 3.7 on my Quad was for benches, and I really never saw much performance increase over 3.5ghz. I'm not saying it will be better than a Q6600. It will just be fun seeing if it is!!

Paul thats only 12mghz higher than what I said. When I said 450 I didn't mean exactly lol There is a big difference between between 462 and 500

LOL. I nover tried any higher than 462fsb because I didn't like the vcore going over 1.52v. with higher temps. I'm sure I could have taken it higher. I think the Xeons have a lower VID. My guess is higher fsb with lower temps. We will see. I've got one coming.

I might do the same if it turns out to be a good chip. My chip is oem might be nice to buy a retail version. Ah hell with it you have inspired me I'm gonna try one aswell might be cool never had a Xeon before.

Only because it is a slower chip at its standard clock speeds.

Beyond that at, heart they are the exact same chip, the only difference being a higher bin.

I just sold my Xeon 3070, that beat my friends e6850 even at stock clocks, almost same hardware.

it was the 3220, thats the same speed (2.4ghz)

I'm actually going to buy a Xeon 3060 instead. I got a great deal on one, let's just say cheaper than a e6550..LOL. It's like a high binned E6600 on steroids, and many people report that it clocks higher than a e6850. With the money I saved, I'll put the rest toward a penryn chip. Tom, it was time I returned the favor regarding these server chips. You introduced me to the 939 Opterons as I recall..

EDIT: Actually getting a x3070, basically a high binned e6700 for $160. Tom (or anyone else), if your interested in a 3060 or 3070, I can send you a link to get it cheap.

Yes, but the Xeons are supposed to run cooler, similar to a GO, not as hot as the C2D b2's. 10x multiplier. My reasoning is this. The Q6600 is a great chip. It was fun to overclock, and was the fastest ship I've ever owned. However, my second and third core are a waste. They are never used for day to day applications that I run, so once I've got all I can get out of it, I have no need for a Quad. So, I sell it. The Xeons look intriuging, so I buy one on the cheap, see what it can do, and bank the $100 toward the next chip..and the fun starts over again.

I wouldn't put much credit on that test report. I among a few others here have seen equal or better performance time and time again in everything with the c2d equivalent xeon.
