Soo i just read about some of the specs on this card at TPU and on the inquirer, does anyone else think Nvidia is just sucking the life out of the consumer with it massive cards and seemingly unimaginative design. i dont want to start an AMD vs. Nvidia thread but it seems like because of a lack of competition and the optimization of the software for nvidia tech they can just poop out another card that offers a little more power for a lot more money. maybe i will be wrong but i have the feeling this thing will be massive in stature and in price, plus we are "stuck" with overprices ultras and SUPER GOUGED 8800GT's untill Feb. sorry for the mini rant there. please weigh in on your thoughts, PRO's/CON's or anything else related to the "NEW" king of the card jungle.

i have a feeling that nvidia just doesn't have new micro architecture to successfully compete with upcoming r680. That's why they are slapping 2 g92 together. But that's just my opinion.

thats kind of what i am thinking. i mean the G92 is a great arcitecture but have a really been waiting with 8000 series for this long justa for a revamp of some of the same cards?? maybe they have an ace up their sleeve (and i wouldnt put it past thier tight lipped tendencies) but if AMD can ever somehow improve the openGL side of thier graphics they may find themselves losing in a high end market that they supposedly arent even competeing in.

(warning i may be in a bad mood beacuse i want to buy an nvidia card but PRICE GOUGING is killin me)

I dont think this was slapped together, but, it should have been the 8900 Gx2, and im sure most of you agree with that. This is not a new generation of cards if it is simply dual core last generation technology. I do hope this is what is going on though, (because) if A...AMD.. can get there foot back in the door before Nvidia goes threw the next one, that will be a good thing.

personally i think they have a new chip thats twice as fast as a 8800gtx by itself, but i think theyre keeping it quiet because they have absolutely no reason to release it at the moment, theyre killing ati, ive seen all over forums lately that people think ATI currently has the upper hand, and that R680 and R700 have got nvidia scared, where are you getting that from people???

nvidia has nothing to fear from ati now or in the near future.

as soon as something "worthwhile" finally comes out in the high end from ati, then nvidia will release something that chops it all over again.

dont get me wrong the hd38xx series is great, good value, and excellent perfromance per dollar, but anyone who thinks top end to top end ati is better, had better wake up and smell the nvidian pwnage.

keep in mind people these are MY opinions and i dont want to start an argument or war about ati/nvidia, not to mention if youre going to jump to ati's defence i simply do not care.

NVidia is not deficient of competition. The Radeon HD3000 series gave NV enough blows to have them worried. At least the HD3000 has instilled confidence in the consumer that they get a little more for whatever they pay.

Benchmark Scores It does boot up? I think.
The problem is HD3k series are value parts (RV670), not high end. Why would nV release a new highend and take a risk when there's no competition against the GPU they released 15 months ago? AMD appears stagnant atm, the VGA wars have slowed down to a mere price war instead of performance war.

But they already have one that beats R680. It's called G92. I don't see how R680 (= RV670 x2) could beat G92GX2 when G92 > RV670.

IMO the name should be 8900GX2. Thats for sure. And second thing is - if someone is willing to change his GPU - there's no need to wait for 9800GX2. Better get 8800GT's in SLI right now. Why? Becouse i have a feeling, that 9800GX2 won't be any much better than this (max 2x8800gts g92 performance).
In future - it is easier to sell 2 cheaper cards than 1 expensive.

^Well it was easy for ATI to rebadge expensive HD2900 XT into HD2900 Pro and sell it now.

I ment for us - end users - with further upgrade it is easier to sell 2 cheaper cards to get money for new equipment.

I don't see how R680 (= RV670 x2) could beat G92GX2 when G92 > RV670.

I suppose this all comes down to how well both CF and SLI are implemented in individual games. I can't remember off the top of my head which scales better but it may be that whilst the individual card is quicker (G92), put two together and they may not scale as well (and thus perform slower than) as two of the slower cards (RV670).

It comes down to how well the cards can utilize the multiple GPU's. If ATI's can do it better than nVidia then they will have a better card if it can`t then nVdia wins again.

the 2900xt and the 8800 ultra were "monster" power guzzling cards.. what do people expect bigger "monsters"..

we are in for an era of smaller but ganged up chips.. so it does come down to how well the drivers can make these things go and how little heat each chip generates..

its not just about total performance.. i think nvidia will do whatever they need to do to keep that crown.. they have the money.. ati dont..

from what i see so far i think i will be far more likely to buy ati x2 than nvidia x2..

According to reviews, CF is more efficient than SLI.

^exactly
sli is not bad but the software isnt just good enough i think th 7950GX2 can do much better with good drivers if they let one card do shading or physx and the other the normal 3d stuff
or textures ext you can play crisis maxed out

TBH, I think the R700 rumors might have nVidia a little perturbed - considering the 3000 series kinda came from left field and, I think, kinda took nV by surprise . . . it's left them on guard as to what the rumored R700 will be capable of, but yet, they still come across as if they know they have nothing to fear :shadedshu

But, IDK, it's hard to say . . . nVidia has a history of pre-emptive reactions to ATI's hardware, and usually, their pre-emptive products don't fare as well as their top-dogs do.

I guess Nvidia should be selling 8800GT's and 8800GTS's cheaper then...
