Ok, so I'm not new to computers - but new to Vista.

I have Vista Ultimate.

At first all was fine.

Lately I'm getting the infamous BSOD on a somewhat regular basis - at least daily - if not hourly at this point. Only seems to be getting worse.

I originally had an ASUS SLi MoBo - it was DOA - one PCIe slot was dead. I returned the first board and decided to upgrade slightly for my replacement board after learning the board I'm currently running will run my vid cards at 2 x 16 (590 Chipset) instead of the 2 x 8 (570 Chipset) on the previous board.

I didn't bother to reinstall Vista - to lazy at the time - wasn't sure if I really needed to? Also didn't want to go through the process of reinstalling everything and the update process. Anyway....

I'm now thinking I need to re-install Vista clean (I called MS and got a new CD Product Key after some colorful "talking" to the annoying MS rep). It's an OEM version of Vista Ultimate.

The most common error I see is CLFS.SYS. I've also see CI.DLL, BAD_POOL_CALLER, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL....etc...

Thoughts, comments or suggestions!?

SYSTEM SPECS:
Windows Vista Ultimate Professional 6.00.6000
ASUS M2N32 SLI-Delux WiFi Edition
nVidia nForce 590 SLI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400 @3200 MHz (Black Edition)
4096 MB RAM (4 x 1024 DDR2-SDRAM) Crucial Ballistix
500 GB SATA HD (3.0GB/S and 32MB Cache)
IDE DVD Burner
DirectX 10.0
ASUS 512MB 8600GT Vid Cards x 2 (Fanless)
Logitech G9 Laser Mouse
Logitech G15 Keyboard
15" LCD Monitor

Not sure what else might be of useful information?

I have Spybot S&D, AVG - and recently added Avast.

Thanks in advance!!!

Run Memtest. I have a feeling you have bad RAM.

I have done that, even ERROR checked the HD - it's ALL new hardware - seems odd it would work for an hour to several and then just BSOD. I will test again though, just to double check. I'm open to any suggestions before I resort to re-installing the OS. What program would you suggest I use for Vista? Thanks in advance.

Running MemTest86 v1.55 - as it's the newest version I have downloaded and currently available on my UBCD. So far it's showing one Failing Address!!?? So I'm guessing he first RAM test I did wasn't any good from Vista or this version is not up to date enough.

Anyway so far it's reading:

Tst:1
Pass: 0
Failing Address: 000c384ea7c - 3128.8MB
Good: c384ea7c
Bad: c384eafc
Err-Bits: 00000080
Count: 1
Bhan:

Soooo - maybe this version of MemTest is out of date or a stick or so faulty. How do I go about isolating which one? Trial and error - pull each stick, text one at a time - does this check the RAM on the Video cards to?

Thanks in advance!

I would bet my last dollar thta your problem is a driver issue.
The problem is that it may be a driver for something on the new mobo.
I would re-install Vista and reload all drivers and work from there.
I know that it is a pain in the butt, but a reistallation will eliminate a lot of guesswork from the equation.

EDIT: This does also have a 500-520ish watt psu that was a generic deal with the case I got - any chance that could contribute to some of it's current instability?

Ok guys - I've got some work/learning to do. I'll keep you posted.

I'm going to start with getting the newest version of MemTest86 available. Then trying 2 Gig's of RAM at a time. This will make it easier to determine which stick(s) MIGHT be faulty. I hope not - although not like I couldn't live with only 2 gigs while I'm working on getting the faulty stick(s) replaced, haha. Thanks again to all - so happy I've found this forum and hope to contribute with helping advice in the near future!!!

Stay tuned...

The generic PSU could be a factor, but I doubt it in this case.

Are you sure your running your RAM volts at its rated volt?

Try a repair on your vista first :toast: Works 90% of the time :D

Go through like you are going to do a fresh install , but instead of install windows look down there should be a repair option click that:pimp:

I have tried the repair option - it won't fix whatevers wrong, haha!

I did a MemTest last night on all 4 gigs in with the newest version and no errors came through. It actually started testing again, haha. I had to let it run while I was sleeping. Hoping to get back to this project soon, to busy helping another friend first up his new rig. Thanks again guys. Will keep you informed.

As far as voltage of RAM - not sure how to check or fix that.

So my PC is up and running again with a fresh install of Vista Ultimate and the proper chipset drivers for the MoBo it's running. So far so good. The only problem thus far is re-installing everything I had before - although I may take that a bit slower - do a little here and there - keep an eye on the inbetween times - maybe some of what I had before was causing issues. Also, can't seem to get a few updates to install through Windows update, oh well I guess.
