CCP's massively multiplayer online game in space, EVE Online, will be the first MMO to be available on Steam, Valve announced today. To celebrate the occasion, a special 21-day trial period for EVE will be available, free of charge, to all Steam gamers. Steam gamers will also save $5 off their first full month of EVE Online. "Launching EVE on Steam means the addition of another fantastic PC game and the introduction of MMOs on Steam," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "The team at CCP continues to expand EVE's universe and gameplay for the legions logging in to play each month, just as we continue to expand Steam's consumer and developer features."

I disagree- I swore I'd never pay for MMO's as they were a waste of time an money. EVE online changed my view of that. Unlike my first impression of MMO's from WoW, EVE involved a lot more thinking and teamwork due to the corporation based design, than I had previously thought. It is also not as simplistic requiring complex analysis of modules and calculations to get the most out of a ship setup. I find it truly engaging and confess I've payed for it, and play it about 2 hours every evening.

I recommend the trial to everyone

I started playing in 2003 and will continue to play until the cluster is shut down. IMHO there is no game available to day that comes anywhere close to offering the depth that Eve gives.

A very smart move by CCP.

I was in the beta, and played for a year or so after. I really just didn't have the time to keep playing anymore, sadly. I hope other MMO developers take a hard look at CCP and learn...

Then you never gave the game a chance really. Once you learn the controls the game is much better.

lol...... EVE quite simply is far to complex for the standard MMOer (should that phrase be changed to WOWer?) and so will never reach mass market appeal. Whereas WOW fills all the basics that an MMO needs to cover EVE goes in detail and expands, I mean EVE has it's own economy..!
You guys should add me tbh (Enom Gwan), I don't play very much but that's the fun of it. You can train skills and coome back when they have completed :D

35k online on the SAME server at any one time, ....

to get all that, plus immense graphics, plus a totally player driven universe, plus just EVERYTHING beats the pants out of a crappy grind this grind that WOW experience.

I agree wow covers the basics, but EVE stomps on it as a true fully interactive, player-based evolving universe.

I think its just great how we can hold sovereignty over specific sectors of space and pod the ass outa scabby Goons and RA

i havent ever played it, but considered it as my new MMO a couple months back... did some research, and found that a LOT of veteran players even were complaining about the futility of ships, how expensive ships are and how quick they get wasted, and then that the whole game is massively controlled by Mafia-Like Guilds/Clans... AND that there is corruption within the developers, having had a number of confirmed incidents of devs cheating/altering stuff for their own benefit.

I dunno, it seems like an awesome game, the only true "Thinking" MMO at present, but seemed like amongst all the complication, there was mad feelings of futility too.

I dunno, anyone have a response? I may consider trying the trial if you can convince me lol.

EVE is a thinking man's MMO; World of Warcraft is a hack-and-slasher's MMO. This is not a negative comment on WoW or its players, it's just that WoW is much easier to get into and rewards the player quicker - which is why a lot of its players are casual players. EVE requires a substantial investment of time before you can buy and pilot a decently powerful starship - but once you've made that effort you're addicted :D.

If you've ever played Homeworld, Freelancer, and/or X3 and you enjoyed those games, then you'll love EVE. It takes all the best elements from those games and throws them into a persistent universe where you can be - and do - whatever you want. The trial doesn't do the game justice, unfortunately, but if you want to try something different, here's your chance.

Here's a video overview of the game - the good bit starts at about 01:10.

dial up is no curse... i had a friend run 2 accounts from a single sial up conexion ;)

granted, that was a while ago, but if you are not using the new graphics update it shouldnt be a problem.
