Just wondering if my computer can handle the 3850 AGP, or going to bottleneck?

yes the system as in PSU and Mobo will handle it.....also yes it will be hugely bottle necked by a socket 754.

It will still look nice and pretty , get ok framerates.....just wont score well in benchmarking!

Thanks
Just hoping to be able to play Crysis, Bioshock, etc;
Untill around March when I plan to get a new comp. and by then I hope they will have the X48 with SLI. If not then I might get the Skulltrail if I can.

I finished bioshock with my X1950PRO, it doesn't need an 3850 to play

Cool, I can go with something with less spec and save money. I see the 3850 AGP goes for 180 euro in netherlands so I assume that's about $ 265 Canadian.

The 3850 is the same price and/or cheaper than the 1950XT (in AGP format).

The 3850 uses less power, and therefore less strain on your PSU

The 3850 is faster, and therefore you will be able to apply more graphics effects (without CPU overhead) compared to X1950, e.g. FSAA, AA, higher resolution.

Your frames FPS may not be a lot faster (due to CPU bottleneck) and you "extra features" may not be higher (due to CPU bottleneck), but your resolution and FSAA and AA with DEFINITELY be a lot better with the 3850. I see no reason why the 3850 wouldnt also give you better FPS than the 1950 at the same resolution.... it just wont scale as well as it would with a faster CPU.

Its also HDMI compliant.

There is absolutly no reason to buy an X1950 now that the 3850 is out.

unless you live in North America as these things don't exist here.

For CPU i suggest getting a venice 754 from ebay, these overclock very well compared to newcastle

Thanks for the info. all very helpful, excellent points. I should check into getting a new CPU or learn to OC on my old system before I do it on a more expensive unit.

Is your processor a Venice core? What kind of chipset does your motherboard use? If you can get a 3850 and are able to OC the rest of your system, without having to upgrade anywhere else, deffinitely go for it!:toast:

its really easy when did you build this system, if its before 2006 its gonna be newcastle as most retailers got rid of them before they stocked newcastle, that and AMD didnt move Venice to 754 untill 939 Venice was well established, and if its pre mid 2005 its forsure newcastle and if its even older possibly clawhammer

After reading up a bit, your board has no pci/agp lock. You can expect about a 18mhz bump on your fsb and that's it. The good news is, if you want, you can actually use Vista and DX10, though your system will have a hard time handling it. nForce3 chipset boards can overclock better due to a agp/pci lock however, the chipset doesn't support DX10 cards with Vista. This leaves you to find either an ATi chipset board (almost impossible to find) or a Uli chipset board with the agp/pci lock. You will end up spending more money than you want to.

I have expenicne with that board, it overclocks well actully, most modern AGP cards and PCI cards can handle increased bus demands very well.

And if he really needs a board with an lock on it, id gladly swap him my MSI K8N Neo FSR board, as its my backup to begin with. Just to help a member out.

If my memory serve me correctly, which I doubt. It was before the 939 come out. I think sometime in 2005. I'll check when I get home.
I plan to limit the spending on the old comp.

Dude, wait and build a new system. 754 is no slouch but I am having a 939 with AGP and thinking whether to upgrade to 3850 from 1950 pro or wait and build a new PCI-E system. If I were you I would buy a new generation cpu+mobo+PCI-E and enjoy.

If you are going to spend money in March to build one, why waste money on new AGP card?

COD4 - even my Other machine's X1600 Pro AGP played well at 1280 med settings. No lag. The machine is a 754 socket one.
