After cutting prices, Sony managed to sell 4.9 million PlayStation 3 video game consoles during the last quarter. Combining this with the lower manufacturing costs, and more and better games, Sony's gaming division has finally made a profit. After many quarter of repeated losses, Sony has managed to turn things around and total profit rose by 25% for the last quarter. Sony also lowered its sales goal for the PlayStation 3 from 11 million for the whole year, to 9.5 million because of the poor start, a fiscal year which ends in March.

If Sony had priced the PS3 competitively instead of insisting on this silly prestige angle they would have been making a profit from the launch date of the console, I bet Sony wont make the same mistakes with the Playstation 4.

Sony does have a lot of fanboys to help them though tbh, they have massive brand recognition on their side. And have wicked marketing skills!!! Just look at the box, "real life synthesizer" = aka 7800
It really is testament to Sony's marketing that they managed a profit soo quickly. Now if only we could get easteners(???) to buy into western products we might have a better economy...

Its all falling into place and it priced competitivly for an excellent game machine and a decent blueray player to boot.

Lol, PS3's graphics card is nothing at all like a 7800. It's architecture is completely and utterly different.

Yeah its very annoying that PC enthusiasts compare hardware the way they do. The PS3 is many times more powerful than a 7800. Can a 7800 produce an image at 1920x1080 at a constant 60 FPS....and were not talking about Warcraft 3 or some ancient game.

Wrong

550 MHz G71 based GPU on 90 nm process, 24 pixel pipelines and 8 vertex. Same as a 7800GTX.

Unfortunately the good looking games (on both 360 and PS3) are upconverted to 1080P rather than their true resolution being 1080P, even that is still alot to ask for for any graphics card out there (for PC or games console). There are very few games out there whos native resolution is actually 1080P

The PS3 gpu is like a 7800GTX. The reason it it seems so powerful is because devs only have that card to work with and not 7900's X1900's 7600's X1600's etc. so they can optimize the hell outta it.

except that G71 is the gpu used on the 7900GTX G70 is the 7800 series other than the GS

set all of your settings to medium/low and it will cause thats exactly what the games on the PS3 do

It isn't the hardware, it's the software. This goes for any console. There is only 1 hardware configuration. Compatibility therefor is no issue. This makes writing games a lot more efficient. A console therefor utilizes the hardware a lot better, doesn't make the hardware faster though.

Just look at Wii specs, and the gamecube before that. They hardly have any RAM to work with, yet still work fine.

Well, I'm not one to take a wikipedia source seriously but yeah I was wrong. However, I've heard that it has anywhere from 24-32 pipelines (Sony has claimed 136 simultaneous operations per cycle). Instead of using a PCI bridge it is connected directly to the Cell. It has a G70 chip.

Although I'm guessing the PS3 graphic's card has few special things to set itself apart.

That wikipedia source is made even more bad by the fact that no one actually knows the true data surrounding the Sony graphics card.

OF course it does! The internet, and wikipedia threatens a teacher's very existence. They despise the internet and wikipedia. I can remember years before wikipedia, you would get in trouble citing any information from the internet at all. Now a days, teachers can't really get away with that because the internet can be very credible. I know sooooooooo much about how computer hardware works, and that's without taking thousands of dollars worth of computer classes at the university. The internet and wikipedia is a threat.

No.

Idiots and people who want to put bad rep for a company or product do. Sure educated people will post very relevant information on Wikipedia, but because of those people that change it up ruin it for everyone else, and challenges everyones credibility

So, then you agree. Wikipedia is credible knowledge. If you don't need paper credentials on a particular subject, just go to wikipedia for some good, quick, and free knowledge. :)

IT also has alot to do with the PS3s Cell chip. That combined with the Nvidia graphics chip is what makes 1080p games at a constant 60FPS. YEs the PS3 does do that.
