I'm seriously on a tight budget, but I looking for an upgrade. Crysis plays quite nice after I edited the config file, but only at 800x600, at most 1024x768. Will X1800XL (overclocked) would be a nice upgrade? Or should I shoot higher, like X1950Pro, or X1950XT?

I would shoot higher, the x1800XL isn't exactly a power house card anymore and wouldn't give a major upgrade over the overclocked 7600GT.

Yeah I think I should shoot higher, since X1800XL clock is pretty low for today standard

Hmm...is there anyone with X1800 or X1900 that play Crysis? I'm not gonna play at high resolution, 1280x960 medium should do nicely

My two x19050Pro machines handle Crysis@1280x1024 just fine.

I agree with Newtekie1, as long as you don't max the settings then an X1950Pro or upwards would be good. Aim for an HD3850, but if not, you might be able to find a cheap X1950XT

I can reach X1950XT, but in order to reach HD3850, I need a couple more months, another problem, HD3850 256MB is quite at the same price as HD2900Pro 512MB, which one should I get?

Do you want to wait two more months? Are you going to go Vista (DX10)? Where are you located?

If it's worth it, and the card will last long, I can wait. I'm not planning to even touch Vista, and I live in Malaysia (just edited my profile)

Wrll if you want it to last I say go with the HD3850, even though it's got less memory (bad) it consumes so much less power. That means you won't need to upgrade your Power supply anytime soon- not because it can't handle it- but because it will slowly stress it. Those things consume monstrous amounts of power. I'd wait- but by then the HD3850 will have gone down in price and you can pick up a nice 512 MB model. That will be slightly faster and far more efficient than the 2900Pro.
Hope that helps.

Yeah I know, I've done my homework before asking, HD2900 series sucking power like nobody's business. One thing about power draw, I don't like my PC to become tornado, last time I run Prescott on my PSU, it makes quite a noise, both from PSU and CPU cooling. Stock X1950XT cooling isn't exactly silent in the first place, so does X1800XT cooling (I have X1800GTO before)

I hope HD3850 would be quieter than my 7600GT, the MSI fan is the noisiest in my PC, on the CPU side I use 120mm fan to cool down the CPU and the chipset+VRM cooling moduleon the mobo

Anyway, cheers theonetruewill thanks for the advice :toast:

I use RivaTuner for overclocking, and I done no mod at all. My idle temperature is the same as you, but the load never exceeds 70C

I'm on PCIe so it might be a little different. I need to increase PCIe bus to 115MHz from stock 100MHz to reach that speeds, if not the core only goes to 630MHz

Other question.

at those clocks, does it has any articfacts? you use ATitool to test it? When i tried to use Atitool with my VGA it doesn´t recognize the card. It says BUS Tipe=O (zero)...bus speed 0 (zero) pipelines=0 all says 0Zero i don´t know why!

The X1800XL is too slow to handle Crysis at acceptable frame rates unless your content with playing with the settings on low details at 800x600. The 19xx a decent cards but it's aging your better off investing an an ATI 3850 which is only 20% slower than the 3870. The 8800 GS is also a good contender. These cards are only slightly more expensive and would blow smoke on the 19xx especially in newer games. Both 3850 and 8800GS would probably only handle Crysis on medium at 1024x768 at around 30 FPS, but all other games should play with ease at high details

My bro had a 7600GT AGP, and it could never reach the speeds my 7600GT PCI-E card did.
