Isn't it? Sure, get more speed out of your stuff but isn't it pointless? I will buy low-end stuff and overclock it to a high-end level and that actually does something in games, but other than that if you already have an 8800gts 512mb and a C2D E8400 what gains do you see other than a bigger EPENISMARK06 score?

I just do it cause I can with this rig, except the video card, it's pretty much mandatory lol...

Well, team and 8800GTS with a 939 Venice and you have a major bottleneck. My system, even overclocked can't max Crysis, but stock, it REALLY can't run it.

Doesn't it void the warranty too?

It's all about doing better, but with a bigger budget. With overclocking, there's always that little bit more juice you can get out of it.

Not just for benchmarks either. I can make a different between what resolutions you can run a game at acceptable framerates, which is more important with larger monitors, or allow you to turn on more AA/AF.

The point is, it's just fun. It's a challenge to get the most out of your hardware. It's simply a great hobby with some legitimate function. :)

Overclocking just seems to damn complicated.

This is what I think overclocking is:

-Go to BIOS
-change a bunch of stuff
-OMG FAST.

and yeah it does void warranties but most manufacturers will still RMA for you anyway

It voids warranties ONLY IF you go over the maximum voltage recommended by the company. Like for an Intel E8400, the maximum you can go up to is 1.3625V. Anything over and they will know after you send it back to them for an RMA, which you will get denied.
If your scared to do that, then just set it to the max voltage and try to boot up to the highest frequency you can go while still being able to play games at that setting.

if overclocking is pointless so is paying a lot more dosh for something u can get for free.. why not turn a 200 dollar chip into a thousand dollar chip if u can.. it seems pointless to me not to overclock..

done wisely it is akin to getting something for nothing.. i recon we all like doing that..

i do anyways..

Overclocking... pointless? Just the sheer fact that we can speed up our hardware based upon need is absolutely awesome! I wish there was a bios for my p.o.s. Dodge Shadow. I suppose it's pointless if you don't utilize your OC, then you are just wasting energy. But taking something you have, and making it better and faster, and doing it by changing some values in a BIOS without having to pay more money to upgrade is most likely the reason this has overtaken my passion for cars. I still love cars, and honestly the satisfaction making someone eat your dust in style can't be beat. But, overclocking and getting an application to run well at settings previously unheard of for your system is damn close.:toast:

I just do it cause I can with this rig, except the video card, it's pretty much mandatory lol...

Well there are points you have there, but even if you're used to OC-ing lower-end stuff or older stuff, once you do get your hands on something of higher-end status, won't you wanna see just what that extra cash can give ya? Asking that question to some hot-rodders about their engine builds, restorations, performance mods and such may get a flying wrench your direction! :p

I'm so used to tuning and OC-ing components anymore, even if it is a higher-end deal, I'll see what it can do...granted I may not run it 24/7 if my games don't need it, but when I need a boost when games become more demanding on that piece of hardware, it'll be nice to know I can crank up the clocks (temp/cooling within params of course) and not have to go drop another 2-300 on a better vid card, more RAM, a faster CPU etc...I look at it as a way to keep what I have for longer, so though I may OC, I keep my temps and voltages in check and ensure stability in methods I deem proper.

Those who OC for 3dmark and syn-bench scores...I may not see a point, but they do...and if that's what they wanna do and invest in, then more power to em.. I'd rather know my gaming rig is good to go for GAMING. Sure I tune the hell outta my rig, run those same syn benches, but I don't require them to make me content...my gaming takes care of that end.

To each their own I guess. In the end does it really matter? :toast:

Yes sir!!!:D Just consider 3dMark06 the "dragstrip" for OC'ers. If you got a HEMI, you gotta race it! Though I much prefer Ford 427 "side-oilers". Enough car talk! Hat, if anything OC to fold! OC to find a cure!:toast:

I fold all the time on my PS3. That's pretty much all it does right now. Plus, I'm one of the people who can benefit from folding from a health standpoint. I think they need to start folding my genome personally.

To the point where you have not-the-best hardware and you want to make it perform better, nothing wrong. Afterall, a E6550 is no different to E6850 except for a lower multiplier value, it's not that the E6850 has a 'xillion moar' transistors. But when you talk about QX9650, it's not about 'pushing the limits' but making the processor run at the parameters its truly capable of, truth is, with the proper cooling+tuning+supportive components, you can make a QX9650 perform way better than what it is out of the box. Nothing wrong in that. So for the 1000 odd bucks you pay Intel, you're squeezing out each penny worth performance that the product can give you.

Overclocking is a hobby, much like postage-stamp collection. It's exciting, sometimes expensive but it's fun alright.

Without overclocking i would'nt be the current 3dmark 06 tpu champ.
So overclocking isnt pointless at all. Its about buying what you can afford and running it to its full potential to get more for your money.A good cpu overclock can make your games run like youve just upgraded your video card.
