I was wondering if there is any truth to a rumor that you will achieve better overclocking results by only using 2 out of 4 dimms? like 2x2gb instead of 4x1gb??

yes and no, depends on the memory mostly
if your using a s939 board then i wouldn't suggestion using all 4 dimms

It is less work for the memory controller to run 2X2048 than to run 4X1024.

I dont think it matters as much anymore in DDR2 as it did when running DDR!

On AMD I don't think it would matter that much at least with AM2 due to the memory controller on the chip and not the northbridge... on Intel systems with extreme overclocks a lot of vMCH (northbridge) is nescessary due to this.

My own theory, don't quote me on it.

I know Mussels has a Q6600 at 3.6 gig and 4x1GB sticks, can't matter too much...

I'm sure if you're after every last MHZ and fine tuning the lowest timing possible on the lowest stable voltage at a high speed 2 sticks would be easier for an Intel based rig to manage, but in the modern day and age I think it doesn't hurt too much. Considering that it's going to have to deal with 2 gigs in 2 dimms or 4 gigs in 4 dimms...I think the power control and performance will be very similar...as Fitseries stated from experience.

I'm still a fan of just using 2 of 4 dimms...but using all 4 dimms won't kill your OC completely...may need more power for a more even spread, but even at that I bet would be fairly minimal anymore.

Guess we need some more of those that have tried this out to post some comments though!

Apart of the Memory Controller or Northbridge, also can be a related heat question? I mean, having 4 sticks all OC'd should produce much heat on the memory sticks just cause they're all together and very near from each other than just two.

As long as they are matched it shouldnt be a problem.

Eg, dont put a set of low latency ram with high latency, as it will all become high and make the low lantency ram pointless.
