Microsoft has commented that there are still no plans in place to introduce a Blu-ray player for the Xbox 360, despite comments by Stan Glasgow which seemed to hint that such an add-on could be on the way. A spokesperson for the company said:
There are no plans to introduce Blu-ray. In response to Stan Glasgow's statement that Blu-ray is a possibility for Xbox 360, we have made no such announcement. Games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.
So Xbox 360 owners could find themselves without the ability to watch new HD movies in the coming months as film producers stop selling HD DVDs.

If this turns out to be true this will only shows MS's resolve. It's no sweat off of MS's back IMO. We have to wait and see.

Well honestly, at the prices the Xbox 360s are going at, it is ok not to have a HD playback capabilities.

Considering it is cheaper than the Wii for the arcade variant and just 30€s more than a Wii for the Premium, i really see the console really well priced for the pure console gamer....especially since the game library is larger than PS3s or Wii....

cheers

When did MS say they would discontinue HD movies from the marketplace???

Uhm...huh? If I deciphered this right, you are saying sony wont license the license to MS. I dont know if they wouldnt offer it to them, more money for them I suppose, but its all the same, it should be a game console.

Does the Wii offer dvd movie playback?

Hmm they will win more if they don't give it to Microsoft, because they will kill slower th 360if it has blueray in it! And Sony wants to win the console war!
There is much more money in there!

And the Wii doesn't offer DVD playback!

Well im not bothered i bought my xbox 360 for the games if xbox 360 gets blu ray i wont buy it coz i dont want nor need it.

Digital downloads and a external Hard Drive are what id go for especially when you can make a cheap media centre box that can do much more than just play movies. If i wanted to take my HD movies to my friends instead of having a stupid load of scratch able Blu Ray Disks just take the external Hard Drive with all my movies on it.

Think about what MS could do for the next gen: They could scoop up the HD DVD manufacturing plant, and publish Xbox720 games on old, cheap HD DVDs. Prob best tho that they use Blu Ray for the 720.

Why not just adopt internal Blu-ray players?

People with the external hd-dvd players won't feel left out in the cold, and dvd-9 will still be supported.

interesting idea... make the HD-DVD format internal to the xbox, so future games could take advantage of the high capacity? why not, considering HD-DVD is essentially dead and will die off from the market. wonder what the cost vs. benefit of that'd be, or if it'd even be worth it. honestly, do modern games actually need that much space anyhow

Well I do know that Gears of War installed on my machine took up over 10GBs...

Then there's Bioshock at like 7, Call of Duty 4 at 6.5, F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate is around 6, not to mention the original and expansion. I had to start installing games on a partition on a bigger drive because my Raptor was full because of huge games.

It was just a thought. They wouldn't have to pay any royalties, and I'm sure since HD DVD is outta here, it may be worth it to buy this plant rather give money to Sony. I don't know if it's fea$ible, but who knows...
