i think its a typo as you can only do Sli (2 x 9800Gx2's) via the single Sli connector

looks like the 9600 Sli is the way to go as those cards are around ~$150ea whereas a Gx2 is ~$600ea

Because each GX2 is two cards already bridged. Three of them would be 6-way SLI.

The 9800GX2 already runs in SLi. So it's 2 9800GX2s, not 4 9800GX2s.

The cpu completely bottleneck'd it, although there's no cpu that could fully respect those two cards for 3dmark.

to me Sli = 2 cards crossfire = 2 cards

The 3870 X2 has 2 seperate Grfx cores that are connected by a bridge chip on the PCB - they are seen as crossfire on a single card. Therefore two of these cards is considered Quad Crossfire - 3 are not possible since there is only one Crossfire bridge on top of the cards.

Its the same for the GX2's. They are two seperate cores that fit into one PCIE slot, and are already considered as SLI configuration. Two GX2's is Quad SLI since there are 4 Cores. Again, three GX2s are not possible because they only have one SLI bridge on top of the cards.
