So i do alot of sequenceing/single track recording, and all that really matters to me is sample rates. I have a xfi which does a great job with the supplied ASIO drivers. but i got a P5e board and tried out thier supplied "sound card". It wasnt that good at first but after i downloaded ASIO4ALL it can play any of my FL7 songs at 1ms! 64 samples. I was impressed.
my question is do you think i should actually use this thing. I mean when I start plugging in my guitar and keyboard is it still going to be good?

oh yeah the xfi is pci, and the asus is pci 1x

it's decent, and tackles one of the biggest issues with 'on-board' solutions, which is EMI. Moving the chipset to a riser board like the SFII removes the chipset from interference from the mobo.

Honestly, though, for just standard recording, you can probably get away with the ASUS card; but if you get into a lot of processing, audio encoding and the like, the X-Fi processor is better suited for those tasks. Plus, the X-Fi is also capable of a higher recorded sound quality as it is.

BTW, what X-FI model are you running?

the "extreme gamer"

thats what i was curious about was how is this going to sound overall, not just playback. I do wish the xfi had more than one input

I agree with imperial reign. It takes away a lot of the EMI issue but you still have it to a point. Also, sample quality isn't as high as on the X-Fi.

EDIT: After seeing your response, the xtreme gamer (one I currently have) has different settings on how you can allocate the DSP and the onboard XRAM to be used. One of those is music/recording.

Dude,
I just switched from the SupremeFX II to a X-Fi!
This is a huge difference.
Especially in games, never thought that this makes such a difference.

supFX II is not THX certified and games that rely on this code to provide sound will have a problem... for example "conflict: denied ops" will refuse to give sound output on the supFX II...

so you might want to consider that...

Use the X-Fi. It has a much higher capture quality.

Really?
Well, I give a damn - the X-Fi is the one, which sounds supreme.
Well worth the $$$.

would anyone reccomend this card for FOptics output? my turtle beach isnt cutting it in Vanguard I get a lot of skips and missed noises. tempted to try it. VG is such a CPU intensive game I dont want to buy another card that has the CPU do all of the work. any thoughts?

If vangard is giveng you problems because it's using too much cpu power, the turtle beach won't do you any good. It still uses the cpu to decode. You have to look at cards with a built-in DSP. That pretty much means a good Creative based card, like an Audigy2/4 or X-Fi.

agreed. Other products on the market will work also, but are very high on the price scale - Auzentech Prelude, Razer AC-1, ASUS Xonar, EMU 1212M.
