Case mods done, pc isnt powering up

My bro put a new heatsink on, a few fans, some more RAM, and another video card to run in sli. the heatsink is the ultra-120 so the mobo had to be removed to install it. When it was all assembled, went to power it on. and it light up and the fans turned for like half a second then stopped. I checked the mobo, cpu power connections, and the case connections to the mobo. all good.

check 'em all again, unplug then replug psu (with power switch off), perform cmos reset

Could there be any fasteners on the backside of the mobo (from the ultra) that could be shorting to the mobo tray/case?

I once had a similar problem on my 780i but discovered that I replugged the floppy drive in the oposite way. Would only power up breifly then stop. Check all connections.

well i pulled the screw out, put the mobo back in. all plugs are in. motherboard, cpu, IDE, sata, video card. still no go. is it possible that a short like that frying the mobo?

btw when the psu goes on. the usual blue light on the motherboard does come on

Ouch! By chance, did you reset cmos again? I would have him come over your place with the rig and check video card,ram, and processor (if running same socket) in your rig. Cause, I beleive it is the motherboard, but it is also possible that there are some bent pins on the cpu if you have not checked that yet.

well its his rig im workin on. cpu wasnt removed when he did this work yesterday. put on some new paste, new heatsink, added two sticks of RAM, another video card for SLI(i just have 1 in till i get this to boot), and a few new case fans. his computer was on and working before he installed this stuff. ive never seen a boot problem like this. usually the fans at least turn on.

i reset the cmos with the jumper, then moved it back. still no go

also took out the new sticks of RAM. no go

Yeah, sorry I cant be of mroe help to you. Truly does stink when its really close to getting done and you get a "speed bump" like that. I hope the board isn't fried.

when he had ordered this mobo. it was doa. But the fans still came on. RMAd that for this one. which worked fine til this little endeavor

trying powering up with cpu, one stick of ram, and one gfx card. Unplug all other devices. If it sill doesnt work try alternating the ram sticks and gfx cards with other you have.
If a computer cant post with just those three. you got a big problem!

Im hybrid_theory's brother, the one with the computer. Hybrid talked to a person in his class whos done a lot of electrical work, and he thinks its the psu as well. I shall try disconnecting more parts. If that doesnt work ill switch PSUs with my brother, see if that boots it.

as stated previously ...google instructions on how to jump the PSU itself and see if it stays powered with nothing hooked to it!

k jump started the psu, and it worked. put in the slave drive, 1 video card, cpu and mobo. fully booted. so i told my bro to plug everything else in.

bang same problem.

ieven put it back to the 1 video card cpu, and mobo again and it doesnt boot at all.

im thinking its maybe lacking the power to do it, and when it does, it needs a jump start

You changed the CPU cooler with the 120 Ultra, did you install a fan also, if so did you use the MB CPU Fan header? Just wandering cause the bios may not be detecting a fan and shutting down the board to prevent damage.

yeah the cpu fan is in the correct plug on the top end of the mobo.

board was purchased in january i believe. power supply same time.

well this is his computer. we've only worked with his parts. but untill the new hard drive, RAM, and 2nd video card. it worked just fine

If so just start back at where it will boot fully as posted in the quote. Then add hardware piece by piece until you find the culprit that is causing the crash.

Didnt see the mobo. my dad has this mobo and we have had big problems getting his q6600 to run. We are still working on fixing it now! You need to get it to post so you can load the up-to-date bios. Have you got another cpu you can use? You really might have to run it "naked". Download the P07 XFX ISO bios file from xfx on another computer, burn it to CD, and try to get the computer posting with just a cd drive, gfx card, cpu and one stick of ram.
Then pop the disc in, let it work it magic and try putting the system back together bit by bit.
