Hi guys, i am new to site but in no way new to computers, i have a little mystery.

I was building my 5 year old son a PC and ordered an Asus P5E VM DO to be used in the system. From my experience building numerous systems i have the habit of assembling the whole thing outside the case first and checking that all is ok before i put it into the case so that is exactly what i did.

Problem was that the mobo just wont POST, the green light on the mobo comes on showing that power comes into it but thats where it ends ...no POST. i have tried resetting the BIOS, 2 different processors ,different rams brands and hard disks, i even tried with just the processor and ram only and using the onboad VGA to see if it will POST but nothing worked.

As soon as i used another Mobo to test (P5K) it starts woking with other stuff unchanged, so i sent the mobo back to the dealer and complained that it was defective, now i get this email saying that they have tested it with 4 different Processors and it works fine, therefore they are sending it back to me with a little bill for the testing :twitch:

Any ideas what i am doing wrong that it doesnt work with me but worked with them?

thanks.

thanks for the reply, i assembled it outside the case on a piece of cardboad so no spacer involved at this stage to cause a short :)

did you test another psu? just wonderd if it could be a power thing.

ive known power supplys to fail but still kick out enough to light up fans etc..

is the 4 or 8 pin power connector plugged in that will power the onboard graphics etc.

Welcome to the Forums.

Did you try using a video card instead of onboard video? Or another video card? You've got some kind of conflict going on.

tried my old 7900gt , with no luck. have now tried 2 different Antec PSUs and one Codagen no luck.
However i am inclined to believe you are correct about that conflict issue, i strongly suspect that too but the mystery is what is causing it :-(

Hmm, now that to me is definatley the mystery.

Anyone considered that the company is full of **** and it really is defective? Seriously? What company 'tests' with four processors on one board submitted by an end-user under the premise that it's 'not working right...?'

If you have a friend with a system, or a spare (different case) than the one you are trying to put this board into, use it.

The companys name is Shg.dk located here in Denmark, they have served me well in the past so i cant see why they will play smart with me now.
Anyways , i will pick up a new PSU monday and try that, i am too lazy to dismount the one i have in my gaming rig just to test it. :(

Maybe the board senses proper grounding. It could rely on all the standoffs grounding all the eyelets in the board. Try using a dmm to sense an open or Resistance between one of the eyelets and the atX header or io shielding GND. Put it in a case and see what happens. Also a board can pick up alot of RF and EM if it's too close to a CRT and outside the case.

A monitor either CRT or LCD can emit large amounts of interference. I've had an asus board
not post sitting right in front of the monitor.

That`s not what I meant !

Is there a bios hang preventing the system from posting caused by an incompatibility with other components mouse or keyboard?

thanks.

I've had this happen in the past. It turned out to be a dead bat. Won't post but fans operate. Was a bit tricky to find.
