Michael Dell has said his firm can regain its spot as the world's number one PC maker by switching its focus to consumers and the developing world.

"We're growing faster than our industry," he told BBC News, "so if you keep on doing that for long enough time, you'll certainly get there."

Mr Dell returned as chief executive in 2007 after the company he founded as a college student was overtaken by HP. He said his turnaround strategy for the firm was already bearing fruit - sales were up 19% at the end of the year, having started the year falling at a rate of 11%.

Dell now plans to focus more on home users, as well as continue supplying computers to businesses.

Additionally, Mr Dell added: "As we've gone to the consumer we've been paying quite a bit more attention to design, fashion, colours, textures and materials."

I hate to say it
but it's not a mac, and nobody is quite scene enough to care about the case alone
and I thought everybody stopped buying Dell workstations a while ago?
Decent screens, but that's it IMO

well if they can make me a gaming laptop made out of rubber that wont melt & also bounce like a basket ball & take a beating from a Kung Fu Master then I'l take 1

but they have opened up a lot - rather then just being mail order they are trying to win the hearts & the minds of the consumers. but they have to understand that there are loads of competition in the pre-built market & they need to find a way to stand out from the crowd OTHER then thinking their a f**king bling by making defferent colour 'shell suits' they can put on laptops.

I'ts like that diamond crusted nokia phone nokia made some years ago....i dont think anybody in the right mind would buy it unless its Posh Spice from the spice gurls or some other vain whore/retard that whose husbands have far too much money on their hands.

back to square 1 i think Dell....

they really need to add a margine where customers can negotiate a price - or throw in a ton of free stuff with their laptops -

In hong kong - it doesnt matter anywhere you got to buy a laptop (unless its a dells shop) you can always negotiate with the sales assistant who most of the time are more then happy to reduce the price & possibly throw in a few freebies to get the sale.

THATS what Dell need to do - its no good just taking a selection of laptops & slapping them down in front of them & saying This is a f**king laptop theres a lot more to sales then knowing its a laptop.

Its a lofty goal, but Im not sure they can do that. All this outsourcing they are doing isnt good for their customer base.

Yes it is. Lower prices attracts customers. Why do you think Wal-Mart is the biggest retailer in the world? Outsourcing.
