I have a Gigabyte P35-DS3L that has the F7 Bios, I just bought a E8400 to upgrade and want to new F8 bios that supports the Wolfdale. The problem is I don't have a floppy, is there any other way of flashing the Bios?

Can't you install it onto the hard drive, and it will install the new BIOS at startup? I know it works for my Dell PCs, but I'm not sure whether Gigabyte or the vendor has that kind of BIOS installation. Try looking at their website for a Hard Drive BIOS installer. Its much easier than using a floppy or Floppy-CD emulator.

DVD\CD (if your board supports it, it will have the drive letters in the flash program) Some BIOS(is BIOSES the plural for BIOS?, I forget :) ) will show you the top level of your C: drive, I have updated like that before. Or a USB stick, or like someone else said Ausus updater or a flasher that works in windows.

I used the ASUS EZ Flash to flash my P5KC BIOS in Windows - it failed and wrecked my PC - I had to RMA it, and the new board came back with the same BIOS :ohwell:

I am now too scared to try it again, despite the fact it reports my E8200 temperatures wrong (-4*C in BIOS or 244*C in Asus Probe/Speedfan). I cant risk taking it above a 1,600Mhz FSB unless I switch off Q-Fan as the fan just wont kick in ever.

I'm not sure if flashing it from a bootable CD or USB is safer than from within Windows, but my gut feel is that there is less that could go wrong.

I cant see how a cd is any different than a floppy drive..... they just speak different languages.

I have used Asus Update 4-5 times (2 different PCs) to update the Bios and even 1 time to downdate it... never has a problem, never even thought of using EZ flash...

Well, if you make sure all programs are closed when you install it, and that you don't have any viruses, then it should work fine. I'd say flashing with a floppy would be more dangerous, because those things are more unreliable than a hard drive.

then it should work fine.

"should" being the crucial word here - yes it "should" have worked, but it didn't. The progress bars showed it erasing the old BIOS and flashing the new one which went fine, but the verification failed. My mistake was re-booting at that point instead of trying to re-flash with the old BIOS. Lesson learned and all that.

Anyway, the point of my post in this thread was to point out that BIOS flashing is not without risk, and I don't think any reasonable person could disagree with that. I have flashed many other boards and gfx cards with no issues before, but it only takes one...........

+1 for bootable USB device solution.

I've just upped a zip file with tools for it :
- HP utility
- NV Flash v 5.40
- cwsdpmi file
- Afudos v2.29 ( Asus updater utility )

You can dowload it here
