Would it be a dumb move if I changed my PCI-E HD3850 to a AGP version? This current mobo doesn't seem to like my current GPU... the AGP version wouldn't cost incredibly much and I'd almost get all the money back from selling the PCI-E version that I'd spend on the AGP one.

Or, could get a new mobo but it'd be quite a pain-in-the-ass to install all the stuff again.

why would you ask a question like that, youd be paying more just for a AGP version, beyond that Most PCIe/AGP combo boards are not separate as of bus thus performance will be much lower on AGP than a Native AGP Motherboard. So dont trade in for a AGP version, stick with what you have, if you think the Board doesnt like the Card, i suggest Changing the board to a Native PCi Express Design.

Yeah I'd prefer a full cover block, but I can always change. I have two spare waterblocks, one for my old 9800 and one I had for my X1600 Pro. Waste of bloody money they were. :(

Weird, try this...

I'm hoping I can change the quick connect fittings on my pump to 3/8" - if so I'll be very happy.

All of this is delaying my build(s).

I believe that board is limited to 4x PCIE - coupled with a lower end Core 2 Duo it will be somewhat bottlenecked - even if stable. You should continue forward in your upgrades. The AGP would be a move in the wrong direction. If looking for some approximate performance I put the below together some time back.

Credit goes to me. Data gathered from Futuremark ORB 3DMark 06 - When latest Cat was 8.3.

If anything this is a conservative estimate of performance for HD3850 and includes both AGP and PCI-e. These interfaces are essentially yeilding the same performance for the HD3850. I have read the comparisons from the reviews of the HD3850 AGP, but am not going to waste further time by searching and then writing a bibliography of those sources. Search if you want, they are still out there. The fact is AGP was nowhere near saturated when the move to PCI-e was pushed by hardware manufacturers. That said, the HD3850 will be the last, or at least should be the last, AGP card as the next generation of cards would saturate the AGP Bus. Regarding the graph, as the 2 trendlines diverge you are reaching the graphics potential of the card with the drivers that were used. The Blue trendline is the Graphics portion - it levels off in the 9000's. From that point on very little graphics performance improvement is going to occur. The Total 3Dmark score continues to rise solely based on CPU performance.

Just take it for what it is: a Graph meant to help people - one that Futuremark could easily create from their own database, but hasn't.

So true on the CPU being the pushing factor behind 3DMark06, In that test my CPU on the second test gets 1 FPS. Im pretty sure those with A64 AGP and PCI express units with same card outperform in that test only. My Score came about from the Cat 8.1s

Maybe some one off you could help me with this question.

I have a AGP based system, i am going to upgrade when the new Nehalem stuff is coming out.

But until then i want too give my old system a little boost.

I have a P4 3,4 Ghz HT prescott processor
a Asus p4c800-E deluxe mainboard
2048 MB ram Dual Channel

and an AGING X850XT 265 mb card.

I was planning on buying a HD 3850 512 mb AGP for my system, but i have the feeling the rest off the system will be too slow for it and wil work as an bottle nek expecially the CPU.

Because i have changed the cards ones already to a 7950GT, but that was not sattisfactory.

I did get a higher score with 3dmark06 almost doubled it but in CALL OF DUTY 4 i did NOT get more frames per second with the 7950GT.

So schould i buy a HD3850 512 mb ( and a new powersupply because i only have a 370 watt version) or just keep it as it is and wait.

Thanks, in advance for any help.

My bastard 'new' motherboard from another TPU doesn't bloody work. >.<

I get nothing, apart from the green LED that states the board is getting come current. Everything is dead. All system fans, power or HDD LED activity are non-existant.

I'm freaking depressed!

I'm hoping I can fix this issue tonight.

@ innocentcriminal,

Did you only change the motherboard ??, if yes:

try switching youre ram dimms one at a time, if this does not work the motherboard is probably faulty.

@morgoth, Ty for the reaction.

But just getting one is not exactly an answer to the question, it will cost me abround 142 Euro for the card and another 100 Euro for a power supply so together about 250 Euro.

Sinds money does not grow on my back i want too be as sure as i can be.
That the card will increase the performance of my system without beeing hinderd from the cpu or some other component.

Because the 7950GT is much faster on paper than a X850XT but it was not that way in my system.

I see that youre systeem specs are similar to myn, do you by chance play CALL OF DUY 4 ???.

ya 3Dmark06 is very dependent on the CPU score, due to 2 tests, everything else relies on graphics power.

With the current configuration i get 2330 3dmark06 points,( a little overklock )

I got with the 7950GT about double that about 4400 pionts 3dmark06

But in call of duty 4 i get with the current configuration around 50-60 FPS average and sometimes drops too 20-30 fps, and thats just to low.

With the 7950GT i got the same fps results in call of duty 4 as with the X850XT, so that's why im very sceptic about taking a HD3850 without knowing that it will improve my fps.

@morgoth 20FPS????? isn't that to slow, if you have that few fps in call of duty 4 you would be a lagger.

I too have fps lagg sometimes that's why i want to upgrade in the first place.

innocent make shure your front panel connections are in the right spots ;) that gets me all the time :nutkick:

@ [MD] you'll prolly score over 5000 3Dmarks and get a little boost in actual gaming. i went from an x850xt pe @ 575/600 to this 3850 @ stock/stock and i noticed an improvement both in image quality and frames, moreso in image quality

@ Morgoth,
Yes i know,

Still 20FPS in crysis does not seem a lot to me, then again i never have played crysis yet.

@ Intel igent,

I was afraid you where gonna say that the quality does not matter to mee i only need more frames in Call of duty 4 Multiplayer.

So ill save the money and wait for Nehalem and then make a new system.

Thanks everybody for the info.;)

innocent make shure your front panel connections are in the right spots ;) that gets me all the time :nutkick: :

It's all good, I've sorted the bastard! It was the 8pin on my PSU, didn't make proper contact with my GFX card, but installing the modular 8pin made it boot straight off.

XD

I'm so jazzed!

Time to start with the benches!

Powercolor HD3850 with A64 4000+@2.8 GHz

Hi All,

First time posting here. I have an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum, 2 GB DDR1 at 234 MHz (468 MHz DDR), Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4 GHz O/C 2.8 GHz and a new Powercolor HD3850 running at stock speeds 668/829. 3dMark06 scored 6750, over 3 times what my X800GTO scored when overclocked to 450/550.
