AMD today introduced the industry's first energy-efficient x86 server processors with four processing cores and an integrated memory controller all in a low 55-watt ACP thermal envelope. Blade and rack systems based on five new low-power Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE (Highly Efficient) processors are now widely available from global OEMs and solution providers.

"Our new Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors were designed to help datacenter managers who see power consumption and virtualization as the keys to solving their overall performance equation," said Randy Allen, corporate vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation Division, AMD. "These new processors which feature AMD's advanced power management and virtualization innovations offer a compelling platform for power-conscious datacenter managers who are changing the way they think about performance."

Quad-Core AMD Opteron HE processors are available in both the 2300 and 8300 Series for two-, four- and eight-way rack servers and blades. The new processors have set new performance records among comparable x86 energy-efficient processors, such as top scores for SPECfp_rate2006 in both two- and four-processor configurations, offering businesses of all sizes the exceptional scalability and efficiency benefits of AMD's unrivaled Direct Connect Architecture.

New Opteron Quad-Core Processors:
  • Opteron 2344 HE - 1.7GHz, 1000MHz HT, 2MB L2 (4x512KB), 2MB L3
  • Opteron 2346 HE - 1.8GHz, 1000MHz HT, 2MB L2 (4x512KB), 2MB L3
  • Opteron 8346 HE - 1.8GHz, 1000MHz HT, 2MB L2 (4x512KB), 2MB L3
  • Opteron 2347 HE - 1.9GHz, 1000MHz HT, 2MB L2 (4x512KB), 2MB L3
  • Opteron 8347 HE - 1.9GHz, 1000MHz HT, 2MB L2 (4x512KB), 2MB L3

Benchmark Scores Nyooom.
and not one reaches 2GHz :(

its a pity (for us) that AMD is focusing on 'low power' and 'green' hardware, as opposed to performance.

Sadly AMD don't have the resources(money+people) to make a good chip against intel!
They don't have highK in their chips and they need to have it to have faster CPUs
When intel rolls out CPUs whith HT-tech again AMD will bee more and more down in the hill!
AMD plans CPUs with 6 and 12 cores that is nice but a 12cor CPU with 1.5Ghz or at last 2Ghz
is nothing to a 6-12cor intel 3-4Ghz with HT that is 24core to the OPS side or with a Skulltrain with 2CPUs in it that monster there would be 48Cores to the OPS side! (MADNESS)
The point is that AMD will bee the 2nd for ever if they don't address their own HT technology!
IBM hase HT like tech and highK tech too!
IF they licence IBMs tech they would do in CPUs much much better!!!
(but if IBM would license these techs to AMD is another X-file)

Could this be a sign AMD chooses to focus more on Commercial sales (Businesses) for the near future? Most larger corporations are paying more and more attention to energy consumption and realizing the amount of savings monthly when multiplied by the number of desktops, etc. Where I work we have approx. 185,000 employees worldwide, and last year through an IT savings plan our company saved over 2 million dollars with less than 25% of the PC's swapped out. Maybe AMD see's this as a percentage of the market they can capitalize on until they can compete again with Intel in other markets.

Things that make you say hmmm....;)

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
For those of you who think that companies like AMD, ATI, Nvidia, MS, etc... care about us, they really don't, this is the money making side of their business.

Most blade server systems that feed data aren't CPU limited anymore, they are disk bound, so maintaining performance while reducing TCO is more important than getting a faster processor to wait on disks to feed it data. Our server spews 2GB per data per day in small amounts continuously, so a 3.8GHz dual core is way faster than it needs. But it is due to be replaced this year as the disks can no longer keep up, and a upgrade to a cooler running dual socket server with 800GB of SAS RAID is cheaper than running it and upgrading it for the next 5 years.

550W of use continuous draw @ 70% efficency costs $284 per year to run, plus the extra cooling capacity needed. X5 years $1420.00

these are more or less semprons that are dressed up it the song & dance of Dual Core.

- Low cache
- Low Speed

Im sure if AMD really wanted to they could make it 1mb cache each or have a huge 3mb+ of shared cache.

but over all it just seems really unappealing.... & I think AMD are trying to cash in on the OPTERON name as for a short period of time it was selling quicker then gold dust.

after the opteron cards been played who bets AMD will also put the FX series on the chopper???

owning an AMD CPU isnt about prestige & big epenis's anymore its about something thats cheap (hopefully) & so green it'l even jump into the frying pan & wrestle with your bacon & eggs as your frying it in the morning.....

except they are quad cores and the exact same L2/L3 of the phenoms? read the post befor you insult the chips...

opteron is not a cash cow these are the same speeds/cache of the last attempt on quadcore optys

and if you pay attention AMD chips DON'T need massive cache sizes because of the onboard mem controller which allows the chips to communicate with the RAM much faster than any current intel could wish to achieve

also for the rest of you who have trouble reading these are HE chis or high efficiency you know like lots of work on little watts ;)
