The more competition, the better for us. ASUS intends to take its place among Dell and Alienware, by commencing production of its first high-performance laptop under the Republic of Gamers (ROG) line. Dressed in a stunning aluminum alloy shell finish, the G70S holds two NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT graphics working in SLI, Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 processor, 2GB DDR2 667MHz memory, two 300GB hard disk drives in RAID 0 or RAID 1, 17-inch widescreen display with 1440x900 resolution, HDMI outputs and Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate OS. Peripheral equipment includes a 2MP web camera, TV tuner, a wireless module with Intel Wireless-N wireless network support and built-in 4-in-1 card reader. More pictures are available at HKEPC.

The problem with Asus is you can't just buy a laptop from their site. You have to buy it from a retailer and you can't customize it. What you see is what you get.

I'm not comfortable with gaming on notebooks, on a LAN I don't mind carrying a heavy PC. Nice looking notebook, something tells me it's going to come with a repulsive price-tag looking at how ASUS price their premium stuff.

I cant agree more - for a second there I thought they'd just come out with a successor to the G1/G2s series but it still looks good - i like the brushed metal look except i think dell have already done that with their mid range laptops - something between the 1530 & above.

I like how the vents look on the back - thats gonna keep your 'Spec!al' plants (yeah u now the ones im talking about) healthy for a looong time as well as turning your room into the bannana republic.....

Retailers like best buy or newegg has them fixed specs, but there are online builders that uses the Asus bare bone and spec it up the way you want it. Just google around, usually they advertise in mags.

I have two beefs about that laptop. First is that a sli 8700m GT is slower than a single 8800m GTS (having a single will cost less than having sli). Second, having 1440x900 on a 17" is lame...where is the 1920x1200?

I have a HP pavillion dv9000 2 gigs ram and 8600m 17 inch display and I'm not overly happy with gaming on it. I though I would be , but man, I have to keep most modern games on low to get playable framerates. I think the proc. is pretty lame dual core too, not sure what it is off hand.

It's like you need to spend at least 2 grand to get decent performance. And thats just decent performance. I also think that vista ultimate on it has something to do with its shotty performance. Oh well its great for most source based games, and of course browsing and movies.

Looking at the performance of those graphics cards... you wouldnt want 1920X1200... as the GFX cards just wouldnt cut it.

I am selling a bunch of my studio gear and looking to buy an XPS / Alienware laptop and was pondering the same thing about resolution... I guess I will be happier with the performance at 1440X900 native resolution... will look better as its native... and also the 8700GT cards will be able to keep up

Should drop the idea of a dell or alienware they are both price bloated beyond belief with decent specs. Any upgrades cost 4-5x the actual value of putting it in. Absolutely ridiculous I'd recommend Sager Notebooks. A friend of mine got one has a 8800gtx in it with a T9300 and it games just as good as my desktop. Here is a link for you.

Sager = awesome. But this new ASUS Rog laptop does look really nice. I usually take my aging MacBook Pro with me these days, good enough to play COD4 on medium settings and its hard to take my main rig considering it weighs like 70lb... Gaming laptops make so much sense but only if you can afford them.

Then try out Rock. Here
Seems more than reasonable especially similar systems from Dell. Dell doesn't offer the t8x00 series processor with their lower end xps's, so you get shafted on the processor if you're not looking to spend a fortune.

Believe on the rock site you'll be wanting to look at the Xtreme 770.

What about non-gaming, such as playing 1920x1080 videos? There all gonna be downscaled.

i dont know about you... but personally do you ever watch HD movies on a small 17" laptop?
thats a waste of time really to have all that technology on such a small screen.... i know id never use a blue ray player and 1920X1080 screen in a 17" LCD panel

Remember if you have a 1080p screen in your laptop you need about 2-4X the amount of graphics card power to play games or itll look fluffy
