Right now my X2 4400+ is idling at 37c,30c according to coretemp. This seems really weird considering both cores are on 1 die, 7c seems like a huge difference. Is this normal? It seems to even out more as it gets hotter though, which makes even less sense.

Mine gives 3 on idle and zero under load (prime95). I lapped both the CPU and the CPU's cooler, though.

I use Real Temp to record both low and high temps of both cores.

perfectly normal on a non lapped chip. Also depends on ur HSF. The temps on my quad vary quite significantly between the cores. My old opteron 165 was the same.

I just installed a qx9650 and the cores vary a lot (23, 27, 34, 46) @ idle
I re-installed the cooler 3 times (cleaned and re-gooped each time) with no change at all.
Chalking it up to a non-lapped chip as my qx6700 did not have that level of temperature difference.
Not sure I want to lapp the chip. It was rather pricey.

I have the same problem on my Opteron 170, I've got a 10 degree C difference between cores when stressing with OCCT.

I haven't lapped anything, of course, but I understand that the IHS is much thicker than you'd think.

I don't want to 'scratch' the surface or rub off the nice lettering though ;)!

I generally apply my thermal paste using a razor blade, helps to apply an even amount, so that a small unified film covers the entire surface. It fills in the gaps all by itself, then I mount the heatsink. I always use AC's Cleaning Kit for cleanup.

It has worked great for me for many years now! Ceramique is the best thing I have found so far, it is outperforming AS5 :)!

My HSF is lapped, the cooler kind of is. Well at least it's fairly common problem.
