A couple days ago, I convinced my brother to buy a PS3 rather than a Wii. Unfortunately, Gamestop only had the 40gb version in stock. We ended up paying $530 for the 40gb PS3, a controller, and GRAW II.

The graphics look just as poor as they do on our 8 year old Xbox which is quite dissapointing. Our TV is standard definition, so that might affect the video quality, but I also think that it has to do with the poor quality video cable and the lackluster GRAW II graphics... Aside from that, I'm not exactly sure what the PS3 is good for. Sony was too cheap to include anything other than your basic composite video cable so I had to order a component version from China.

What should I get? I have the PS3 hooked to a standard definition 32" tube TV so I want to upgrade that but a 32" 1080p LCD is $900! I would like to get a larger hard drive and a 250gb model is $110 from Newegg. I also need at least two more controllers, cheaper on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/DUAL-SHOCK-3-PS...yZ139969QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Are there any other accessories that are good like the remote?

Then I have the all-important games:
Which ones should I get? I don't want to spent too much money here so I'm really looking at multiplayer games with high replay-ability. Finally, can I reliably get cheap games on Ebay?

Thanks a bunch.

I've bought lots of games on Ebay with no problem, but you seldom save any money on newer games when you factor in shipping costs.

Pick up a decent TV (720p not 1080p!) and then wait for MGS4 - done.

Have you got a 360? If not then take the PS3 back and pick one up...

There really aren't any great games for PS3, just GTA4 at the moment.

Nah, but I'm not interested in Halo 3 or GOW. I've also used a ton of 360's and they're all really loud and cheaply built.

Will a 720p TV be ok?

i tell people not to buy a ps3 unless they have a high definition tv. it is pointless to play games, which are supposed to be displayed at 720p and 1080p, at 640x480. also, what is the point of watching a blu-ray movie on a standard definition tv? you should have bought a wii. i love my ps3 mainly because it is hooked up via hdmi to a 42" 1080p tv and it happens to be the best blu-ray player available since the picture quality is top notch and it decodes all of the important hi-def audio formats. honestly, you should return the ps3 and get a wii, it will suit your setup better.

Unless you watch your TV from roughly 3 feet away a 32-inch LCD doesn't need more than 720p to look great - 1080p should be reserved for huge TVs and big projectors. I have a 1080p projector, and a 720p projector and whilst the 1080p is sharper on my 120" greywolf, they both look stunning...

As for the 360 question, it's your call but the roadmap of games for the 360 has a better lineup than the PS3. Also, seeing as the 360 is superior in terms of graphics it has a lot going for it on that note... However, the PS3 is a great multimedia machine (the only use mine gets) and Killzone 2 looks cool, so it's not all bad.

I guess that I'll make an HDTV a priority. My couch is 15 feet away from the 32" TV. That should be far enough away to make a 720p feasible. I'll probably just hold onto the PS3 and upgrade TV's by August.

Edit: I already have a Windows Media Center, but I guess that the PS3 is worth it as a media player if only for Blu-ray.

Does anyone have a list of games (in order of value) that are worth getting?

It did, they call it PGR4... What is noticeable on the PS3 (GT5) is that they skimped on everything except the cars. Simple textures on the background and a lack of detail in the surroundings is clear.
Also consider that the PS3 struggles to match the framerate and texture definition of the 360 in the games they share in common on several occasions.
Lastly, consider from an architectural standpoint that the PS3 with its sub-par g70 cannot match the shader power of the unified architecture Xenos (r500/600) in the 360.

Well to be honest i share you're feelings toward the PS3.
It's a great thing but unless you don't have a decent 720p or 1080p screen it sucks.
At first i had my PS3 hooked up on to my 22'' Asus monitor. It looked like playing a pc game with a 3 year old videocard:banghead:

So i bought a IIyama 24'' Full HD screen not knowing i was about to face the same shit again.
Because both monitors don't have 1:1 pixel mapping or something. the screen gets all fucked up.
So i am about to buy a Samsung 2693HM. This is also a Full HD 1080p screen.
But for the same money i can but a 32'' Sony Bravia 720p.
What should i buy? The monitor or the tv?
Sorry for the hijack.:p

Just to make it a point. This thread is about PS3's, please don't bring other game consoles into it unless asked by the original poster. Thanks.:)

If you want to play PS3 buy the TV... It will always look like a 3 year old PC game on a monitor, because that's essentially what it is.

pgr4 is not even close to as good looking as gt5. the ps3 struggles to match the framerate of the 360 not because of hardware but because of programmers. sony hasnt done a good enough job with communicating to software development teams how to code for the cell processor. sony also hasnt done a good enough job protecting their exclusive games which is why there really isnt a reason to buy a ps3 right now except if you want the best blu-ray player in existance. (which i do)

PS3 = bad ports + blu ray with gaming tacked on

The ports are bad and the restof the multiformat games are cheaper on xbox 360, the ps3 exclusives are lacking

The framerate sucks on the ps3 and its supposed to look better than the 360 well i have yet to notice the difference.

The new 360s with the better cooling and less noisy dvd drives are supreme and all 360 come with HDMI now, the controller is much more comfortable and solid (trust me i was a ps2 owner).

I dont see any reason to get a ps3 unless you want a blu ray player and a replacement for your pc.

I mean come on multimedia on a ps3 and linux is nifty but its more of a gimmick than of practical use.

NINJA GAIDEN 2, FORZA 2, GOW 2, GTA 4 and PGR 4 and lastly Mass effect. ALL good games on 360 and that was me not even trying hard to say good ones that was off the top of my head that i own or will own.

I personally use my pc for everything i only have a 360 for LIVE, multiplayer, multiformat games and the exclusives. I use it for all the console stuff.

I recomend a pc first to everyone over a console.

I'm using the PS3 on my computer moniotor with a HDMI to DVi cable. I like it, and it's running in 1080p.

GTA4 simply rules I love that game.

I hate the 360 controler, the ps IS THE ONLY controller I have ever liked....

Multimedia playback on the ps3 is very useful. It's leagues better than the 360. I use TVersity to stream from my PC to my consoles. PS3 is way better, as it requires less files to be transcoded on the fly. No Linux required. A much better solution for me compared to building an HTPC.

And the whole reason ps3 suffers from framerate drops, is because of developers, not the hardware.

And you can't say 360 has the best controller. That's 100% a matter of personal opinion. The 360 controller is great, but many like the PS controller better. I'm just glad it's not like the original Xbox controller. lol.

@flashstar - I liked Resistance: Fall of Man and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
