Why is this? I have an Asus a8n-e. Is my bios out of date (not sure if that matters) or is the cpu locked???? Its an Amd 64 3200

nope bios is fine amd's can go to lower mults on the athlon 64's but they can't go to hogher ones, only the fx series has fully inlocked multipliers. 10 is the max you can go on a 3200, 9 on a 3000, 11 on the 3500 and 3700, 12 on a 3800 and a 4000 etc.

So the only way I can overclock the cpu is by external frequency? I got my 3200 at 2.2ghz right now. I want it at least 2.5ghz, what should I up my voltage to then?

It depends on the CPU-core, e.g. clawhammer cores can be overclocked well without pushing the voltage high, but it also depends on your processor heatsink and how hot it gets.

My Venice 3200+ runs at 2430 (270x9) with 1.425V. At 2.6GHz (260x10) needs 1.6V.

Both Prime95 stable for 18 hours. Hope this helps.

Athlon 64s are halflocked..

They are only adjustable to their stock multiplier or lower.

3200+ use 10x for 10x200= 2.0ghz

The only way to overclock these is to adjust FSB frequency.

Spot on but I have the 3200 and no matter what I do I cant get it to boot on anything but x 10 but that may be purely a volt issue however I can get 10 x 250 on 1.45V but cannot get a boot on 9 x 275 on 1.45V (marginally slower) is that because the higher FSB at 9x requires more volts than the 10 x 250??

tatty_one, me and you have exact same cpu, mine runs fine

270x10 @ 1.55V, with ram set to 166 2.5,3,3,6T1

unless your mobo is weaksauce (which i think yours and mine are comparable) you should be able to sit stable like mine.

if your ram doesnt like the config loosen the timings a bit, should be fine. i cant go higher them 2.7 without dropping my ram to 133, which causes over 300mbps transfer loss.

if it wont boot, try upping to 1.6V.

If you are hitting a wall at 250FSB did you lower the HTT multi to x3? If it's at x4 then it will be unstable above 250FSB.

Yes dropped to 3x, I think its just the FSB speed, the multiplier does not effect the voltage but the FSB speed does hence if I go down to 9x I have to increase FSB speed even more if I wanna exceed 2500.

all processors overclock differently. some people might have a 3200+ thatll do 2.8 GHz with 1.4v others will have one that will barely do 2.5 Ghz at 1.5v

just read the overclocking guide, and since you have cheap ram, id try to keep your memory around 200 MHz, by running a divider.
