Should I hold out for the x58 for my new system, or should I just get the 790i?

I'm just looking for best over clocking ability, SLi, and crossfire I don't do but might once I upgrade to a 1920x1200 monitor, and I'm planning on getting a GT200 based NV card when it comes out.

Obviously X58? X58 is a new socket (not LGA775) and supports Nehalem-derivatives.

If you are getting a GT200 series vc when they come out then why not wait for an Nvidia equivalent mb chipset motherboard that supports Nehalem. That way you can do SLI.

Googled and found this: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/02/intel_nvidia_talks/

Negotiations between Intel and Nvidia over each others' technology are not going smoothly, the chip giant has confirmed. At stake: Nvidia's support for Intel's 'Nehalem' chips, and Intel's ability to support SLI.

In a statement published late last week via Cnet, Intel admitted "there is a disagreement between Intel and Nvidia as to the scope of Nvidia's license from Intel to make chipsets compatible with Intel microprocessors".

The company went on to claim that it's "not seeking any SLI concession from Nvidia in exchange for granting any Nehalem licence rights", in response to speculation that this was the very rock on which the talks had run aground.

Nehalem, due later this year, will introduce a new bus technology that Intel calls QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). If Nvidia's chipset are to support Nehalem processors, the company needs to license QPI technology.

Intel, meanwhile, is said to want access to Nvidia's SLI multi-GPU technology. It already supports SLI in its 'Skulltrail' gaming motherboard - reviewed here - but it presumably wants to extend that coverage to its other chipset products, including those that will work with Nehalem.

Intel's chipsets already support AMD's CrossFire multi-GPU system, though it's not known whether that support yet extends to future Intel chipsets. The long-standing support for CrossFire suggests it will.

If the two companies fail to reach an agreement, Nvidia-friendly gamers will have to turn to AMD processors for their next-gen gaming systems. Intel won't want that, but then Nvidia wouldn't having its chipsets limited only to AMD and current Intel CPUs.

Intel expressed its hope that "this dispute will be resolved amicably". We're sure it will be. ®

Also by that article crossfire support on Intel chipsets doesn't sound for sure.

if you want maxium performance go for X58 but that forces you to buy bloomfield 2,66ghz. 2,90ghz or 3.20ghz als you gona need DDR3
X58 supports crossfire

Do what I'm doing and hold out for Nehalem. Really, your machine at the moment is more than enough for you to hold out and start saving for a monstrous Bloomfield based rig.

It has already been sorted.....although I didnt suffer from it in any case (I was one of the lucky 50%!)

Reports are that both XFX and EVGA (reference boards) latest BIOS release sorted the issue which was memory related about 2-3 weeks ago.

Which doesn't sound all too surprising given what Intel has leaked about it's Larrabee project; which if it ever surfaces to consumers, will result in the end of current operations by both ATi and Nvidia if they don't make some large architectural changes to their products.

Good point.....there were a lot of so called "knowledgable" people in 2006 saying that by 2010 neither ATI or NVidia would be using Intel chipset motherboards for their graphics cards as Intel would try to "squeeze the market" with there own high end grapic solutions.....some then thought though that it would backfire on Intel and the masses would continue to opt for choice and not buy Intel boards!

I would say 790i Ultra simply because ive been an Nvidia fan, there motherboards have excellent layout very nice looks, and the Bios is very simple and can get you some great Overclocks though nothing extreme.

Yeah, my 790i system gladly accepted the update. I hardly even used that system up until then when I found out about that problem. I didn't experience that problem but I didn't want to risk it either.

Your current system is fast enough to handle any graphical upgrade. Saving for a Bloomfield rig is your best bet on a solid upgrade. I honestly can't tell the difference between my setup when I had my xfx 680i in here or the 790i.

I can understand why you dont notice a lot of difference between your 680 and 790 boards, thing is, one of the great strengths of the 790 in it's overclockability is it's at times insanely high FSB's, with your quad and 9x multi you are not seeing the best of the board, now if you take either a 9450 Yorkie with the 8x multi or the E8200 with the same then you really start to see the board shine, with this new BIOS I am touching 4.5gig on my 8200 with FSB's getting close to 570 and thats only limited by the CPU not the board, my neighbour has the exact same 790i as me and he is hitting 510mhz FSB's with Yorkfields.
