total cost 326.96

and you should be able to use that board to OC that chip fairly well

no ram ? i thought am2 was ddr2 and socket 478 (which the op has)was ddr :toast:

id go with picking up a cheap core 2 /mobo/ram/3850 package if you can, better than the x2 range anyways and especially when it comes to oc. btw the e1200 celerons clock damn good aswell, 2.8/3.0ghz should be easily acheivable with any half decent mobo, i like the combo farlex85 posted , damn nice upgrade for the price

I would go Intel anyway. An E2180 and a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L is only $10 more, but will offer better clocking and performance.

i wouldn't touch one of the new dually celly's myself benchmarks show to touch even a 2ghz Core2 you need near 3ghz, the 512k L2 kills the CPU id honestly take a PentiumD over a Celly dual core

I can attest to the fact that the dual core celly's are still faster than PD'd. A customer of mine just had me replace their pd with the E1200, and the celly is definitely faster.

memory isn't very good. E1200 is a little low you should look at the E2160 or E2180 they are only $60-80 usd. stay away from AMD.

Whats the difference between dual channel memory and regular memory?

Double the bandwith w/ dual channel, so less bottleneck between the ram and motherboard. 64-bit regularly 128-bit in dual channel. Its a function of the motherboard not the ram, so basically you need 2 sticks of ram and a motherboard that supports dual-channel, which most modern ones do. Did you check on the specs for your psu?

This is the setup that I plan on buying eventually, once I have the money. Tell me your opinions on it. The total comes to $326.95.

Sure. AMD systems are somewhat cheaper to build. Yes, any serious gamer has no reason to go AMD except to support the underdog/company that needs money. Cheap 780g boards are pretty stable and have upgradability (unless future 45 nm Phenoms don't support AM2+...). I went from a dead 939 system to a 780g, 2 gb ram, and a cheap Athlon 64 X2 and it works fine. Sure I wish I had more, but it cost me 200 USD at the time. Students have no money. So I suggest hopping on Newegg, looking at AMD mobo/Processor deals or looking for one and the other. Deals are to be had!

Yeah, but what do you think of my setup idea about 3 posts up? Also, will the HD 3850 fit on that ECS PA1 MVP 2.0 mobo?

That processor needs to be overclocked for any serious gaming. It'll be a step up for sure from what you have though. Is this build going for more "stop gap" solution? or a "last me 2 or more years" type? That motherboard is kinda far from new considering that amd is up to a south bridge 700/750 now.

I'd imagine that 3850 would fit just fine.

But if you plan on overclocking the processor some and the bios for that ECS lets you (their bios's are kinda sketchy) It's a pretty nice low cost build.

also noticed that that mobo dosent fully support ddr2 800 ram. It'll probably run it, albeit at 667 speeds.

Thanks for the opinion and advice Rurouni. Would this board or this board be any better than that ECS I posted?
Edit: Any board in this price range (59.99-69.99) is what I would be looking for.

ya, should be quite a bit better. It's newer, not blazing new but definately newer. It should have no problems with that processor (which is essentially a weakened Core 2 Duo) and they might have better Bios options. Still dosent fully support ddr2 800, but it should just lower the speed to 667 i believe.

Either sould be fine. The Asus explicitly states it supports 800 via Overclocking so thats kinda odd but they should be relatively comparable. Google around for a few reviews. Lol, at first I only saw the one link.

Lol, thats all good, as long as you saw them. So is there any mobo in my price range (59.99-69.99) that supports 800mhz without overclocking?

I like this board. supports all processors, ddr2/ddr3 and SLI.

here is a good preview of what it can do.
